How to Save Money at Clanton-Malphus-Hodges Veterinary

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr Hodges & Dr Malphus are phenomenal. Very professional and very knowledgeable. They take care of all 4 of my dogs like they are their own. Super kind and caring. My boykin got sick and had to stay with them for 12 days. They kept me up to date every single day and helped me understand what was going on every day. Kudos to both of them. I couldn’t recommend better people to care for your pet. The entire staff is excellent. Thank you Clanton Malphus Hodges for taking care of my best friends.

Came here to neuter my bulldog and do a sperm collection and everything was quick and to the point from start to finish. They knew I lived a hour away and made sure I knew everything that was going to happen before I left. The staff was very helpful and called me to assure me of my pups results and I got from the doctor himself saying his surgery went well too. He even gave my dog an extra medication for his skin allergies which was not part of the appointment. I greatly appreciated it because my pup had to stay overnight and I was already nervous…I don’t like leaving him with anyone feel won’t take proper care of him. 10/10 experience thank you CMH.

Wonderful and caring professionals. From the time you walk in the office until you leave it is clear they are there to ensure your pet is healthy. We see Dr. Malphus and we have never felt rushed or foolish for our questions. We also used emergency services and they were quick to respond and waiting for us when we got there. Excellent veterinary service.

Lost my 8 Year old cat at this facility. I didn't think it was anything deadly serious. He just hadn't ate for a day and seemed lethargic. After running labs and asking questions, Becky said she was going to feed him because that's what he needed to help stop what she assumed was fatty liver disease, but as far as I know, he didn't get fed until 24 hours later. The articles I've read said that cats need to be fed aggressively to turn this disease around and that lack of calories is what causes it. She basically even said that to me when I brought him in, but didn't follow through with it for 24 hours. She also said she would take X-rays. Didn't happen until 24 hours later and she didn't even scan his liver directly. The day after admission, she said she thought he was going to die overnight. I truly believe she made up her mind about my cat and when he didn't die overnight, she decided to finally do her job, but it was too late. I was never given any real answers about what caused his death either. I don't feel like his death meant anything to her. She just shoved it aside and said oh it's a cat and they hide their symptoms very well. I'm going to find a more cat friendly place for my other cat, even if it means I have to go to Tallahassee or Valdosta. I'm so devastated about losing my cat as quickly as I did. Something about it just doesn't sit right with me and I don't want to risk losing another cat at this facility due to negligence.
