How to Save Money at Butler Creek Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr Shell and McKenzie were very kind and listened to everything that I had to say. They genuinely seemed concerned and like they actually care about my 15 week old puppy, Brinkley. I previously had gone to a different veterinary hospital and my experience there was not good and I felt very taken advantage of even after I voiced my concerns it seemed as though they didn’t care, and that is what led me to Butler Creek. From the moment I walked in the door, I felt welcomed by all the staff. Front desk and the waiting area and even the exam rooms are very clean and taken care of and that to me is important. I honestly wish that I had gone there from the beginning but I was in a difficult situation and needed someone and I thought after looking at the reviews from the other place that it was going to be good but unfortunately it was not a good experience. It is hard to find a good vet, someone that truly cares about what they do. A veterinarian you and your pet family can depend on. I do feel that I have finally found that in Butler Creek and Dr. Shell. I definitely will be telling everyone about it and I highly recommend their office.

Our 14 week old St Bernard puppy got sick in the middle of the night. Throwing up from 2:30-5, he started throwing up thick bright red blood. He couldn’t stop. We got him to an emergency vet about 30-45 minutes before they closed and they turned him away. We decided to sit at our normal vet until they opened. They also turned him away. We started driving to a true 24/he emergency vet that was far away and we decided to stop at every vet along the route to see if they would help him. Butler Creek saw him immediately. The vet was a super nice guy, staff was great, prices were affordable and our puppy is going to be okay. Just wanted to give a shout-out to these amazing people. We’ve for sure found our new vet today on accident.

I wish I remembered the team members names, but everyone was very helpful and very compassionate and I felt as though the well being of my cat actually mattered to them. I received a call from the nurse at Butler creek today. She was simply checking in to see how my Minerva was doing. I wholeheartedly appreciated that. Thank you for caring Butler Creek Animal Hospital!!

I love Butler Creek Animal Hospital. Everyone is very nice and caring. I have mostly been seen by Dr. Shell and his crew and he is the best. He is familiar with my girls and is always on top of their issues. So glad I found these awesome people and look forward to many many more years with them.

We have been seeing Dr. Shell for many years. He helped take care of our schnauzer who turned diabetic and then ended with heart failure. He was patient and encouraging during the last 2 1/2 years of her life, helping us maintain all of her health issues. We now have a 15 month old, mini golden doodle and he has been great with her as well. Highly recommend the practice.
