How to Save Money at El Cid Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Generously helped coach me through finding a solution for a sweet dog I found roaming the street on a 100+ degree day. They came right out to my car to try to chip read him and gave him a once over, gave me an approximate age, general health approval. The vet couldn’t have been nicer. They made recommendations in terms of what options I had for trying to find him a loving home. Which I greatly appreciated. Unfortunately no chip was found. He’s currently at Peggy Adams up for adoption- I couldn’t keep him but he was the sweetest dog, knew all his commands. I hope someone gives him a forever home soon.

I've had so many great experiences here! Our puppy is our first child. She has always been in wonderful hands with Dr. Garcia and the staff at El Cid. I know it can be hard to find a vet you truly trust, but I knew after the first appointment with Dr. Garcia we were in good hands. On one occasion when our pup tore a ligament in her knee, Dr. Garcia was able to help get her in to see a specialist immediately and even helped push her up on the surgery schedule. We are forever grateful for El Cid and Dr. Garcia!

Dr. Brozman is awesome and has helped my Angel so much! Thanks to her, we were able to keep him off pharma medicine using holistic natural medicine (though she does offer both which is helpful) and adjusting his diet per her recommendations. She's extremely knowledgeable and genuinely caring, taking time with each client to fully answer questions and explore options together. The staff has been very kind as well. Thank you!! 🙏🐾

I discovered Dr. Xavier Garcia and his El Cid Animal Hospital more than 1 1/2 years ago, when my beloved little Coton De Tulear suddenly fell inexplicably ill. The doctor immediately diagnosed extreme heart failure. Dudley was not expected to make more than several weeks, maybe months, if lucky. Due to the care of Dr. Garcia — and his amazingly kind, loyal, generous and attentive staff — the Dud is still with us as he approaches his 14th birthday. In addition to being prescribed just the right combo of various K9 and human medications, Dud visits the Clinic once a week for a medical procedure that keeps him alive, much like a person on kidney dialysis. Dud, who has the heart of a lion and Lab tucked into a small body, still has an amazing zest for life, quality of life, and a huge appetite! Doctor Garcia is as good with the "parents" of our beloved 4-legged "children" as he is with his actual patients, the dogs and cats. He also has great patience, is available to his clients, and takes the time to meet with you and explain procedures, prognosis, etc. He does not push huge batteries of expensive and unnecessary tests, as a first line of fact-finding as many vets do. My current and late dogs and cats have previously been a outpatient/in-patient of some of the country's top veterinarians and vet teaching hospitals, from Florida to Louisiana, to Kansas and California, and places in between, and Dr. Garcia ranks amongst the best of the best, top-tier! Cannot say enough good things. I trust my animals' lives with him, and would trust my own as well. Also love his devotion and commitment to a wide variety of pet and human charities and causes, his determination to place rescue animals, AND he is very good-looking, too! LOL. Wonderful to have a handsome vet who is easy on the eyes! Doc Garcia is also a WORLD-CLASS opera singer! A very interesting man with so many fascinating facets and qualities. My yellow Lab Scoot, Golden Doodle Calliope and rescue kitty Micki-Boo are also El Cid patients.
