How to Save Money at Advanced Veterinary Dermatology

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr Ursula and her whole staff were kind, attentive, and friendly. The exam room was spacious, inviting, and had dog toys which my dog enjoyed very much. Dr Ursula gave me several well explained options on how to proceed with treatment and I left feeling very confident with the plan we chose. I was offered water as well as my dog which was very thoughtful. Thank you so much!

Advanced Veterinary Dermatology was an answer to our prayers - literally. For two years after adoption, Candela's life was negatively defined by her allergies. Her suffering was constant, yet her GP offered us no solution other than taking $200/month for steroid shots. After a year with Dr. Ursula and her team, our beautiful girl lives a comfortable, happy life. We are saving hundreds of dollars per year because of her knowledge and expertise. But MUCH more importantly, Candela is completely symptom free, and living her best life - something we didn't dare to dream of before finding Advanced Veterinary Dermatology. Even if you're hundreds of miles away - Dr. Ursula and her team are worth the trip.

Dr. Ursula Oberkirchner has to be the kindest and most caring veterinarian I have ever brought one of my dogs to. She truly is compassionate about her practice and treats your pup with the utmost respect and care. Every time I bring my pup in for a check up for his dermatologic immune condition I am welcomed with a warm smile and the same type of excitement you would greet your dog with after a long trip away from home. Her new clinic is absolutely beautiful and all of her staff I are equally caring and kind. She even has “human treats” (the most delightful chocolates) next to her dog treat containers. If you are searching for the greatest veterinarian dermatologist ever you can stop your search with Dr Ursula. She truly is the best and we are so very thankful she is helping us care for our pup!

Hands down, the most professional, nicest and loving staff & Doctor. I took my 5 year old American Bully who’s suffered from chronic ear and skin infections and the diagnosis and information that Dr. Ursula gave us was amazing. They really take care of you and your pet. They absolutely love their profession. Thank you Dr. Ursula, Darla, and Erin for the amazing service

I would highly recommend Dr. Ursula and the entire staff at Advanced Veterinary Dermatology.  My dog, a  5-year-old gorgeous, sweet, solid white, blue- eyed Siberian Husky, has had a 5-year history of severe double ear infections.  Having seen a plethora of veterinarians over the years, the last veterinarian explained that she was literally out of ideas, and that perhaps I should try a specialist. I explained that I had already tried an ear specialist, and she suggested that I try a dermatological specialist.  After one visit with Dr. Ursula, Misha was already beginning to show signs of improvement. It has been 4 months, and Misha is no longer in severe pain and shaking her head. Further, she is in no  risk of losing her hearing. In addition to Dr. Ursula’s unique and specialized medications that are used in conjunction with standardized prescriptive medications, the entire staff at the clinic is amazingly attentive to both the pet and the owner. The clinic mimics; a living room setting, with beyond necessities: European chocolate, specialized coffee and teas, sofas, and dog toys and treats resound throughout the entire facility. Without a doubt, there is not a single veterinary clinic that could compare with her methodologies and strategies. She is knowledgeable, and credible. Note: one year later: Misha has been without meds for the first time in her life, and for 5 months! She is no longer in pain. Her entire disposition has changed. While she was always affectionate with me as her mom, she was anxious around others and avoided contact. At her recent check up with Dr. Ursula, she immediately went over to her and kissed her on the mouth. When Darla, the veterinary assistant walked into the room, Misha walked over to kiss her as well. The only words I can use to describe Dr. Ursula and her team is “miracle worker”. I will forever be in debt to this practice. Best, Marcy MBA EJD Managing Principal
