How to Save Money at VCA Florida Veterinary League

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Matthew Klein is the best! I’ve been bringing my papillon to him for years and have always been so pleased with his care and concern for my Lucy girl. I had a not-so-great experience with another vet here recently but Dr. Klein saved the day with his kind and gentle approach. I am so grateful for him!!

I've been coming here for as long as I can remember and I've never had a bad experience here! I've had many cats throughout the years and VCA treats every single one like their own. They work with you as much as possible. They'll literally sit there and go through ALL of their options to see which works best for you. They are very flexible with pricing and will recommend treatments based on how much you can afford. The staff there is so friendly and will always greet you with a smile. Can't recommend this place enough!

I had taken my Cavalier King Charles to them since she was an 8 week old puppy. Their care , compassion and expertise has ALWAYS been exemplary. I highly recommended them! My beloved 15 yr old pup was lovingly treated by Dr Nix in her later years and when she recently died of old age- a very thoughtful sympathy card - individually signed by each one of the staff members & doctors - was sent to my home. The VCA Florida Veterinary League team is amazing! ❤️

I don't know where to start, lets start with the price gouging. Over $600 to have a kitten spayed and rabies vaccinated? No chip, no over night stay. Yeah, the economy sucks and inflation is outta control, but come on... seriously? I have terminal cancer. My kitten was a gift. A gift my family set up an appointment with this facility (they loved the owner, or I'm assuming previous owner?) They prepaid for the services. I dropped my kitten off at 8:00am as scheduled. Got concerned around 2:45pm as I hadn't heard from them all day. Finally they called me at 4:15pm informing me I could pick her up at 6:00. I was the first one there this morning and the last to leave this evening. Why? I don't know. According to them everything went smooth. One can only speculate other animals needed immediate emergency medical attention. I know when I go to MOFFITT cancer center they don't make me wait 24 hours until I can EAT or DRINK during a procedure. That was my biggest concern for my kitten. Well upon picking my kitten up I was informed I owe another $275. The receptionist was nasty to say the least. Felt like I was in a greasy pawn shop. But the worst of it was after I paid, (were they going to hold my kitten hostage and put her DOWN if I did not have the money to pay NOW? That's the impression I got) the vet tech (I NEVER judge a book by it's cover) with the scribble tattoos all over her, horrific attitude and "dilated pupils" drops my kitten on the ground in her carrier. At this point (I'm a retired Masters Certified Addictions Professional, and a 2 minute biopsychosocial is all I needed to assert I seriously doubt my kitten received any ketamine during surgery as this tech's eyes said it all.) I was given paper work and meds explaining how to administer her medications. I've never had a kitten, nor do I understand the process. It was a "here you go, now get out before we charge you more atmosphere." No, call if you have questions, no explaining. NO CARE. Rude, inconsiderate, uncompassionate. Saddening to say the least. Heart breaking. We will be doing our post op at another facility. As I DO NOT trust these people. Half the staff I met shouldn't be allowed around other humans better yet defenseless animals left alone.

Dr Klein is the best! He was able to see both of my fur babies at the same time and handled my disabled dog with wonderful care. Not only was my cats first check-up on the house, but they also sent us home with doggy and kitty gift bags! Adama loves his new toys. Thank you!!
