How to Save Money at Westlake Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff is very friendly and inviting. We recently switched to Westlake for help with my cats skin condition. Dr Waterman is very thorough and talked us through all of our options. After a recommended diet change and depo shots, my cat started feeling much better. Highly Recommend!

Exceptionally welcoming and positive experience, from intake through checkout. Since our favorite vet retired, we've been trying-out different places, and I have zero reservations about going back to Westlake. Reception is responsive, efficient, and friendly, the tech and vet immediately connected with me, like we've known each other for years, and walked me through *options,* didn't rush to aggressive treatments -- all were fully discussed with pros/cons -- and fees were very fair. And there is some organizational magic going on in the back. After spending a few moments with the tech to share my concerns/needs for the visit, my big pup happily followed her out of the exam room, and within minutes he came back vaccinated, walked (for urine collection), blood labs taken, toe nails clipped (complimentary), and still happy. I LOVED that. I could say more, but will spare y'all. Bottom line: 10/10 recommend.

We have been bringing our 2 fur babies to Westlake since they were 10 weeks old. Everyone there is kind, patient and genuinely care about the animals. Shannon, Angel, Jennifer, Dr. Dunn and all the staff truly want you feel your babies are in the best hands. They always follow up after a visit. They send helpful reminder emails when it is time for a vaccination or visit. They always see us quickly if there is an issue and are also willing to talk it out over the phone, if a visit is not necessary. They are wonderful people and we are very happy we chose them to care for our babies.

Can’t thank them enough for everything they did for us. They didn’t give up on us and made sure my cat was able to deliver last baby without surgery. Thank you again

They took me in last minute if I could make it there in a half hour, luckily I was only 20 minutes away and had time to safely make it there. My kitten was having issues with #2 just screaming after going potty. Turns out she was ok and had testing done, shots, deworming, nails trimmed and flea treatment all for under $130 and the staff/Vet was TOP NOTCH and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place. I have been using Tarpon Animal for sometime for my Midnight but they just have not been caring helpful or even knowledgeable anymore and have gone down hill so I will be transferring him to this place from now on. Tarpon Animal would have cost me triple this for kitty (Twister). This place is a god send 100% and I can not Thank the staff enough for helping my little Twister girl out and giving her lots of love. 💕 My New Vets for my fur babies💕 A++++++
