How to Save Money at Midway Animal Hospital- Largo

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I want to thank Doctor Howell and his Team for saving my kitty. My boy was kept for several days at Midway hospital with a mysterious ailment. Everyone was helpful and concerned, and I could tell when visiting how kindly Micah was treated. I almost lost hope one day, but Doctor Howell would not give up on him. Micah's life was saved, but in the process, he was also cured from his timidity towards people. When someone was visiting, he used to hide under a bed , which is not the case anymore. Through a caring and loving staff, he came out of his shell and can now visit with our guests. I am so grateful! What a loving place Midway Animal Hospital is! Thank you Dr Howell! You and your team are the best!

DO NOT TAKE ANY ANIMALS HERE!!!! The staff here is terribly unprofessional and they do not care about the wellbeing of animals, they only care about making money! I have never had such a horrible experience! We have a stray cat that has been by our place of work for sometime now. She is not doing well and we believe she may be dying so we brought her into Midway to be examined. We stood there with tears running down our face as they told us all that was wrong with her. The information they provided us with was everything we had already told them. They could not give us any ideas as to what might be causing her symptoms. When we asked for an estimate for proper diagnostics they quoted us almost $1000 for extensive testing (most of which had nothing to do with our cats symptoms) and told us that she was likely to die anyways. We asked if we could surrender the cat so that they could put her down and we were told they would not. We would have to pay over $100 to put the cat down. My fiance was obviously upset about the situation and made one comment about how they seemed to care more about the money than the cats health. The pink haired lady that was with us went from 0 to 100 in half a sec. She started screaming at us about how she is sick of people saying that to her. She started banging on the walls and tables while telling us to take our cat and leave. We tried to ask why she was treating us like this but she just proceeded to act crazy. She tried to lunge at us to shove us out and even stepped on our feet. We left as quickly as we could but she chaced us down the hall and then the rest of the staff started running towards us. I have never felt so threatened in a place of business in my life. We were just trying to get this cat the help she needs and instead this place only caused more stress. PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT take your animals here, they will only be put through more pain and stress while your wallet is getting cleared out!!

This is my definite go-to for my beloved fur babies. This place does not charge a fraction of what the other vets charge yet the care is impeccable. I literally have paid $200 for care that cost me over a thousand at other vets in town. They look for the problem they have no issue medicating with the proper medications. I absolutely love coming here there's never scheduling issue and they make it easy if your dog is not dog friendly to slip on in the back. Give them a call anytime your need of a great affordable vet!
