How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Very disappointed with this location. Very negative interaction when I wanted to bring my sick dog in. They were rude, told me my dog tried to bite a nurse in 2017!!!! He was a puppy!!! It is 2023 now and he knows the drill going into the vet. The snottily told me I needed to medicate before I brought him in to the tune of $46 prescription for Trazadone in order for them to do what they needed to done to find out what could be wrong it was going to be $450. They came to this conclusion without seeing him. The whole conversation was one sided and so rude and condescending. I got the feeling they didn't want to deal with a sick dog so they made it as unpleasant as possible so I wouldn't want to come in. Such a stark difference from the Banfields I dealt with in Washington State, where the 2017 incident happened, and they continued to see my dog without medication. I just might discontinue my health plans and get something else so I can go another place. I just don't trust them anymore.

I’ve been using Banfield for years and loved them. But I recently moved to Lakeland and had horrible experiences at this Banfield. We had to put our cat down which is traumatic enough but it was the most awful experience with this vet. I won’t say their name because I understand being a vet is hard and there are some serious issues in the vet field right now. Our cat was diabetic along with other issues. When we put him down the vet told us that there is now a pill for diabetic cats and we basically just missed out on saving our cat. I have no idea why they would tell us that. When our cat passed the vet just stood there are we felt like we were rushed out and had to just cry our way through petsmart awkwardly and than sat in our car crying. To make it all worse as we waited for our cats remains we never got a call. I finally called and they said they have our cat and don’t know why anyone called. We won’t be coming to this Banfield again for our dogs. Absolutely traumatized.

I’ve been to this location 3 times. The first 2 were so bad, I wrote corporate. Dog waste in fro t of the check in and in the rooms. People were not nice. I ended up driving two hours to the one I usually go to after that. We were leaving town and I wanted my pups to have their flea and tick meds (I have an optimal wellness plan) for the trip and a nail trim so I gave it another try. I was amazed. Clean and expecting us. We got checked right in, and the tech that worked with my pup and I was fantastic! They outdid themselves. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! 😍

I really hate to leave 3 stars because this is the first time I’ve had a negative experience with Banfield. I’ve used Banfield for other pets and never had an issue. I adopted a 1 yr old black lab who has anxiety issues. I brought him into this location to start the wellness plan. They examined him and charged us over $300 but failed to start the wellness plan. We were told to bring him in a wk later to start the wellness plan which I don’t understand why we should have to come in again. Just put a card on file and charge it since you JUST saw him 🤦🏾‍♀️ Anyway, I bring him in today and he is super anxious. I can’t even get him to the back of the store. The medicine they gave us is ineffective (which isn’t their fault). I tell the lady at the front desk the situation and she really couldn’t care less. You would think a vet who probably deals with anxious dogs periodically may TRY to help…nope… They just make us reschedule. Then they call back and offer a more expensive plan so they can sedate him. He isn’t vicious. Once he gets in the back, he will just give in but their best solution is to sedate him instead of helping me get him back there. To make matters worse, they don’t even try to understand you because they won’t even let me finish a freaking sentence so I can explain things to them. I’m trying to give them another chance because the wellness plans are worth it when it comes to the care of my fur baby but they need to get more compassionate staff who actually care about you and your pets enough to listen and attempt to help.

I used to go here for my 2 cats and 1 dog, but I had to switch vets because of how I was treated. I have a cat who gained weight very easily. I then put her on a diet but the vet wouldn't believe me when I told her. She went so far as to take an X-ray of my cat without my consent, just to prove a point. The vet showed me the X-ray and said "This is fat. This is all fat." I was livid after this and refused to come back. I was also heartbroken because she did such a great job caring for my dog. My dog had a strange growth and the vet performed the surgery necessary and had it tested to see if it was anything serious. Fortunately, it was only a histiocytoma. It hurt a little to switch vets, but it had to be done.
