How to Save Money at Southeast Veterinary Oncology & Internal Medicine - SEVOMED

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We've been to SEVO twice with our Aussie. 2021 for Autoimmune, the outcome was terrific, she spent a week receiving care and blood transfusions and transport to First Coast ER for overnight care. Our second encounter was for Lymphoma, and treatment began that day with Chemo. Second treatment resulted in Sepsis which we were not apprised of. This resulted in a fast hour long drive to First Coast ER. SEVO recommended she be brought to thier clinic. Her condition worsened. I was not notified. I called in the afternoon at 3pm. I was instructed that she was going to need overnight care back at First Coast. I was instructed that I would need to transport as SEVO under new ownership doesn't provide the service anymore. Another fast hour trip and transport a severely ill and now dieing animal. Dr. Newman had just left on vacation and we didn't know who was in charge. The next day our beloved Aussie was critical and on life support. The hard decision was made, after I had to track down the acting physician at SEVO who was in charge, which I desperately needed to consult with. I'm extremely dissatisfied that transport to ER First Coast was no longer available and that during a crisis I had to track down the physician. It's been over a week since our little one passed and not one call, email or any communication has been received. I feel the service we received on our second encounter with SEVO was about the money. Not about care for both the animal or the Parents. We were told Quality of Life. I feel this could have been handled so much better if we were informed about the possibility of Sepsis. Our Aussie should have remained at First Coast for life saving care. We should have known who would be the acting physician to consult with and lastly, reach out to the grieving family. Since this is your patient. (Cleo) Aussie Shepherd.

A thank you is just not enough to express how grateful I am of Sevo, all staff, and Doctor Neumann. The fact you are welcomed in a way that describes a warm safe hug and everything will be okay. I hope the staff knows you are changing the lives of our pets and us as pet parents. With that support I feel you have given us the hope we need to just walk in that door. We know why we're there and we aren't alone because of you and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you. Dr. Neumann was nothing short but amazing. He makes sure you understand your options, gives high quality knowledge with his own views, and endless kindness and love toward your pet. I am grateful for both locations in helping me through this journey with Whiskey. So thank you again for all you do each day because you are greatly appreciated and thank you for making this journey a little bit easier for us. You are a true hero. 🐾

Dr. Neumann and this staff were some of the most compassionate and caring individuals I’ve ever met. I was confident in every decision made in the treatment of my dog and would 100% go back if the need were to arise.

The entire staff here are phenomenal. Starts with superior customer service by the amazing front desk team. Every phone call, they are so kind and polite. Calls pet parents "mom" or "dad" instead of "owner" which always makes me cringe to hear. Greets my boy when he walks in and talks to him. We have seen both Dr Neumann and Dr Deitz but mainly Dr Deitz for a couple years now for a bunch of different issues (abdominal tumor/ultrasound, heart disease/echo, and anemia/blood). My boy and I have a lot of trust and respect for Dr Deitz. She takes great care of him and keeps me filled in with all the different details of everything. It can be overwhelming sometimes to travel over an hour one-way with my Senior boy. But once we get there, I am always glad we made the trip. Dr Deitz lets me ask plenty of questions and will return my calls if I think of more things to ask once I get home. She always compliments my boy whether it be on a toy he brought, his curly hair, or his phenomenal temperament. Makes me feel like he is not just 'her next appointment', but that we matter. I've had a full blown crying breakdown once and Dr Deitz was compassionate. We have seen dozens of doctors through the years, so trust me when I say the Sevo team stands out to us due to their genuine concern and quality of information. A note on Dr Neumann who we saw once for a tumor and an ultrasound/aspirate ... he is also spectacular. Will talk to you like he's known you and your dog forever and you'll swear by the end of the consult that your kiddo must be his fave! Then you realize he is just great at what he does. I was fearful my then-13 year old couldn't handle surgery and it wasn't really optional ... Dr Neumann assured me he was healthy enough and surgery went incredibly smooth (surgery @ First Coast), after all. Thanks Sevo!

Dr. Neumann and his team were phenomenal to my baby girl, Valentina. She passed in my arms on June 26. I wish we would have discovered SEVO Beaches sooner. Dr.Neumann was truthful and I appreciated his candor and professionalism. This team truly cares about you and your pet.
