How to Save Money at Jacksonville Veterinary Surgery and Orthopedics
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr Neihaus saved Juliet’s leg. We got Juliet as a foster dog, she came with a broken leg that se thought that the only possible outcome was for her to loose that leg, but somehow Dr Neihaus fixed it! I remember when he called me after the surgery, I was sure that he was going to say that the leg was so damaged that he had to amputate, but instead he told me that the surgery was complicated but that it went great. Juliet has 4 legs thanks to Dr Neihaus. I can’t thank him and his team for the amazing care they took of Juliet. Here is a video of the first time that we saw Juliet walking on her 4 paws. ❤️❤️ and pictures of the before and after XRays.

I cannot say enough positive things about this practice! Dr Neihaus & his team are the most kind, caring, compassionate and skilled professionals in town. My cat was going to have knee surgery but ended up needing an amputation. They walked me through the process and recovery with ease. Otisserie Chicken is now feeling like himself again. I definitely recommend this practice for all pet parents in Jacksonville!

Dr Neihaus and team provide excellent service. My 2year old French Bulldog needed BOAS surgery. It was easy to schedule an assessment, review the options in great detail, and get my pet on the schedule asap. I received a personal call from Dr Neihaus upon completion on surgery day with a full update how the procedure went and what was done. Our dog healed in record time. I was quite worried what recovery would look like. All questions were answered with confidence. I believe the expert skills and medications given played a big part in his recovery. I can’t thank the team enough to help our boy literally BREATHE easier to extend his quality of life and overall expectancy. We can’t thank you all enough.

I’m truly grateful to have discovered this outstanding veterinary surgery facility here in Jacksonville. Recommended by two other trusted vets, I visited for a diagnostic procedure with Dr. Neihaus for my dog, Bella. Although the diagnosis was difficult, the entire staff displayed remarkable compassion, care, and professionalism throughout the process. The facility itself is beautifully decorated, creating a comforting atmosphere, and is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic technology. I feel fortunate to have found such a top-tier veterinary office and will not hesitate to return should my other dogs need care in the future. Highly recommended!

DR. NEIHAUS helped us with a Christmas Miracle. After a week of what seemed like hospice care for our one year old Doberman….Things looked hopeless. Our regular vet (also an angel) discovered something on ultrasound. He made the call to Dr.Neihaus. They told my vet they’d see us right away and to head on over. My husband and I were very conflicted as we told ourselves we would NEVER do surgery again on this dog. Yet the situation, the expertise offered & our hearts couldn’t say no. Looking back I am so glad our hearts made the decision. Dr.Neihaus made a discovery that explained not only the emergency at hand…Yet the year of discomfort my dog has gone through. I have no doubt in my mind he did his best to correct the mess he found in there. We are all very hopeful she will be able to live a normal life after this. If we run into anymore issues we also know there is a plan in place. I wish her first surgery wasn’t so detrimental and we saw someone like Dr.Neihaus. It truly does make a difference who works on your dog during surgery. We learned the hard way. Thankfully the compassionate team at Jacksonville Veterinary Surgery and Orthopedics gave us hope for a new chapter for our ONE year old Doberman. Truly so sad most of her life was in pain 😭. Halo is doing great after surgery. She ate happily the night of surgery and continues to do so. Incision incredibly tidy and clean. I cannot thank this angel and his team enough. Truly from the bottom of my heart thank you! ♥️🙏😭 (Photo is her on day 2 of recovery. She’s a gift) lol
