How to Save Money at Oceanview Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my dog to Oceanview unexpectedly after moving to the beaches from the west side. I wasn’t expecting to need a vet for awhile but when my Australian Shepherd, Juno, got really sick and started having puss on her paws and a red and irritated mouth I had to bring her somewhere. The staff were so amazing and friendly. They were also so kind to me, knowing that I was looking for care but without much money to spend. They let me know each step of the way what was going on and got my consent for care, notifying me of the price for services with kindness and patience. They were so sweet to my girl and the vet even brought her in a stick with peanut butter after I mentioned she loves it. We are happy to have a new vet to rely on in our new home!

We've been taking our pups Marcie & Bretta there for almost 4 years now, and wouldn't want them to go anywhere else! Bretta has always been a bit nervous warming up to new people, and everyone has always been very gentle with making her feel comfortable, to the point that she now goes in with barely any nervousness. We LOVE Dr Nicks & Dr Kane - they are wonderful and so sweet! They are great along with the nice vet techs! Bretta just had a minor surgery for a mole removal. I was nervous taking her in but from the moment I dropped her off to when I picked her up later in the day, I could tell she was in the best hands and that everyone genuinely cared about her. Dr Kane was fantastic with calling with updates post-op and checking in in the 2 weeks after surgery, and Bretta has healed beautifully with very minimal scarring. Marcie has allergies and has to go in from time-to-time to get allergy shots, and they are always quick to fit her in. Their prices are also very reasonable compared to other vets, from wellness visits, to surgical procedures. We can't say enough good things about Oceanview and are always recommending them!

Fantastic business. The vet tech (I don't remember her name, so sorry!) that did Max's vitals, etc was absolutely wonderful. She got in the floor with him and made him comfortable with her and the surroundings. Dr. Christi DeMonte is great and will definitely be our new veterinarian from now on.

Found a big hematoma on small dogs chest days after getting blood work at this facility. Took dog to two other vets and hundreds of dollars later to confirm it was from the blood drawl. They could not tell me where they took the blood, no one documented it. We reported it to them and days later got an email. Not a phone call an email! Also another dog wrongly diagnosed at end of life. I was told cancer in bones by emergency vet, then at follow up with them I was told no cancer, then months later cancer. We have switched all of our animals to another facility.
