How to Save Money at VCA Simmons Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I wanted to take a moment to HIGHLY recommend the groomer at vca Tina. Tina provides top tier service and provides a wealth of knowledge with dogs. We are so happy Vca provides grooming. A kind thank you Tina, you have my boy looking like a super star. We have received so many compliments.

Imagine being a customer with this business ten years plus and the medical director Dr. Bailey Pierce telling you you’re not welcomed in the lobby! I am disappointed with vca to say the least and esp with Dr. Pierce the medical director who I have trusted to take care of my dog the last year! I reported her unprofessionalism to corperate only to find out she told them she never told me I wasn’t welcomed in the lobby of the hospital. How can vca trust a veterinarian like this with animals and name her medical director? How can I trust you with the care of my dog and you lie on me as a pet parent? I have lost all faith in this facility after ten years and won’t be returning. Everyone be aware of this doctor and know she lies on clients and plays the victim!! You will never care for my dog again!!! It’s sad and unfortunate you cannot trust this vet who is named medical director over vca Greenacres!!! My experience has changed the way I view this facility and I’m scared to allow my dog to return!! She should’ve had better sense than to say I wasn’t welcomed in the lobby nor my dog!! Do better VCA!!

Dr. McKenzie was so thorough with explaining everything to us in detail. The whole staff was helpful and friendly. I highly recommend this place

I had the recent very stressful experience of my dog having a relapse of IMHA(an immune disorder where she destroys her own red blood cells) just a few weeks before my sister’s out of town wedding. She needs 7 medications administered at specific times, and not all together, some liquids, some pills, some with food, some on an empty stomach, and needs a blood test every 2-3 days while in an active relapse. I was recommended to try medical boarding at Simmons by my specialist Mini sees for her IMHA. I cannot say enough about how wonderful they were while I was away for 3 days. They sent me several photos of her daily, with updates about what she was up to and how she was doing, and sent me her blood test results to say she was doing just fine. They made sure she had plenty of attention and interaction with people since she had to be isolated from other dogs the whole time. What was a very scary situation for me turned out amazing, and I plan to transfer all 3 of my dogs from my current vet to here soon. They really went above and beyond, and I couldn’t be more happy and grateful for the care Mini received there.

The doctor was not friendly. Called my dog aggressive and said it's better if she gets fixed. The vet assistant tried taking my dog out of the room and when I said I will go with him he said fine I will clip his nails here. He still left with my dog and left for about 5 minutes. The doctor talk to me in the meantime as if she wanted to distract me. Gave me a very uneasy feeling. The guy came back with my dog and he just left for 5 minutes to get nail clippers? The doctor then clipped my dogs nails while the guy held him. Something is just not right here. My dog was shaking all evening and something was wrong with her.
