How to Save Money at River Bridge Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The Dr. Fox and all of the staff were absolutely amazing. Awesome. I cannot describe into words the courteous and professional service I receive today for me and my little chihuahua Chanel. One might say what kind of service did I receive well, the assurance that my little Chanel is OK and healthy and the service for my little. Chanel was just awesome. She is doing well other than some fleas but she is doing awesome.

We've been going to Riverbridge for couple of years now, but we no longer go to this Vet. Our dog was healthy for years based on how well we took care of him. There was pressure from Dr. Fox to put our dog on a diet, even though we were told he is NOT over weight. We understand it's better for his joints/bones to lose some weight so we tried it out. However, there was no Diet Plan put in place or any feedback/guidance provided by the Vet. We suggested to take him off the diet and then they agreed yes otherwise for one year NO direction was given! By then it was too late, he had lost 40-50lbs. His muscle mass got so weak that he injured his knee and required surgery. I was even told not to cook for him, which doesn't make sense since home cooked meals are healthier. Suggestions were made to buy food from the Vet or online. Dr. Fox never had anything nice to say. He was always rude, condescending and even walks out of the room when we didn't agree with him. Not sure why he behaved this way with us or if anyone else feels this way. After these strange encounters we switched over to the other Doctor in the same office to get their advice/opinion, they agreed that a Diet Plan SHOULD have been put in place. Since the knee surgery our dog sat and ate as he wasn't strong enough to stand. Due to this he developed a uncurable condition where anything he ate/drank he threw up and lost even more weight to a point where he stopped eating. He went from a healthy 180lbs to a sickly weak 120lbs, this is NOT ok. It was heart breaking and traumatizing, we didn't sleep for months. This Vet claims they could not find a cause of his condition, but the truth is the negligence of this Vet was the cause. They put our dog in this state, it all stems from weight loss. I REGRET taking their advice. When we stated our concerns to Riverbridge they told us take our dog ELSE WHERE. Imagine your child was in such bad condition and this was the Doctor's suggestion, this was horrible. What concerns could they have about my comments, because I was speaking the truth based on facts? Our dog has been through numerous testing with xrays/ultrasounds/bloodwork/surgery and been in the ER 3 times on IV and a $20,000 bill. We've suffered through so much emotional damage for months. Dr. Zellmer was the other Doctor we switched over to as she was helpful, caring and compassionate, it was a positive experience with her. She made time to call/text and discuss when needed. The front desk staff was always great too. Thank you Riverbridge for your years of service we appreciate it, but we will NEVER return to this Vet based on our experience with Dr. Fox from the past few years. We tried our best to go above & beyond to save our child, but he is no longer with us and now in Rainbow Bridge. Everyone will have their own opinion and we're not here to change anyone's mind, but our story needs to be heard. We are doing this Review based on facts, it's not a theory. He wasn't just a dog, he was our Son and he was taken away from us at the age of 7.

I don't even know where to start. Everyone at the hospital is amazing. It was a long hard week for us. Our 16 year old baby girl Holly had slipped coming through the doggie door and did something to her back. When I called on a Saturday morning, Amy was on the spot with an appointment. Dr. Zellmer saw her and gave us a prednisone plan to get her back up and running. Throughout the week, Holly decided it was just time to go to the eternal dog park in the sky. Holly passed peacefully at home, but that's where Amy and Sam truly stood out at the hospital. They helped with all the final plans, they were kind, compassionate and truly caring. We brought Holly into the hospital and they took care of giving her a dignified cremation. During the week after her passing Dr. Zellmer took the time to send us a hand written sympathy card, which meant the world to us. She showed us how much she truly cares for her patience and their humans!! I went back to the hospital to pick Holly up and was completely blown away but what they had done. The package I was handed was a surprise. I was expecting a cardboard box with Holly's cremains in it but that's not what i was handed. I was handed a velvet bag with a beautiful wooden urn, a patch of fur and a paw print. Absolutely amazed at what they had done for us. Everyone at RiverBridge Animal hospital is AMAZING!!

Everything about this Vet Clinic is amazing. Both Dr. Fox and Dr. Zellmer are caring and take their time with your family and your pet. They always answer the phone and work with your schedule to get your seen ASAP. Mail and email communication is great for routine visits and you always get a text to find out how your fur baby is feeling after a visit. I also love the work they do with Second Chance Rescue.
