How to Save Money at Family Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can not say enough good things about this amazing animal hospital! We have 2 cats ( well one just passed away 😢) and a dog . The doctors are so nice and knowledgeable! We had lots of problems with our little Bengal cat and doctor Anna spent so much time trying to help him , he had an amazing support from all the nurses ♥️ Even on his very last day we were surrounded by all the love , they made hard day for us little bit easier 😢 After every appointment they call and ask how our babies are doing ! We will never trust any other place with our babies! Thank you so much we love you !

We love Family Animal Hospital! We got our first pup Rosie in October of 2022, and have brought her here since then. The staff is so quick to answer our questions, provide excellent care to Rosie, and are able to see her quickly when we need to. And happily help deal with her excited golden retriever puppy craziness! I’m always able to email or call with any questions in between visits too. They’re the best!

Our experience at this vet after several years of going here was unfortunate. My two pets have gone here since they were babies. Von (dog) is 4 years and Sam (cat) is 3 years. We scheduled Von's first teeth cleaning on a Thursday (verbal confirmation), but the vet actually scheduled it in their system on a Tuesday. Much to our surprise, we get a call on Tuesday asking about Von's arrival, whereupon we learned that it was actually scheduled for that day (not Thursday) and the procedure was going to cost between $550 and $1,000, and it was considered a surgical procedure ... we had no idea. The vet stated that they sent an email, but we didn't know it was coming because the lady that made the appointment stated that we could fill the paperwork out on the day of arrival, so we didn't see the email until we were told about it on Tuesday. Of course, we had to cancel because we were already at work. Fast fwd a few weeks ... I try to schedule Sam's annual visit, and the vet wanted me to prepay because we cancelled Von's teeth cleaning "last minute," and they had no problem telling me to go to a different vet if I didn't agree to do so. Wow, this was not how I expected to be treated! When they missed our dog's annual visit in May this year (they weren't able to provide an explanation for how this happened), we accepted it as a mistake and moved on, but with this clear misunderstanding, this "family" vet was quick to tell us to find another vet? Seriously? Although this vet has always been nice to us in person and seemed to care about our pets, this business was pretty nasty to us during this experience. Based on email correspondence from the vet, it felt like they did not care about what happened or to find a solution. Instead, the vet appeared reactive, insinuated that we were lying, and seemed happy to discard our family from her practice. This made me realize that this vet is less concerned about the relationship and more concerned about money. You won't see this side of this practice until you have a disagreement or misunderstanding, but the experience was definitely an interesting one ... one that you won't experience with most professional businesses!
