How to Save Money at Colonial Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

They saved my dog after others said to take her home, she isn't going to live. We didn't give up and bought her to Colonial for a second opinion. Very caring and thorough! Kept me updated every step of the way, but didn't give up! They monitored her through the night and when we took her home she was back to her happy, spunky self! They also allowed me to be with her in case she didn't make it and treated me so kind! This place is A++ #1!! Shout-out to the amazing Dr. Amy and staff!!

Thank you for your help. We brought our cat Peep to this ER Vet, it was very busy we had to wait, it was Sunday. Both my wife and I are healthcare workers and understand why the wait. Care was effective and reasonable, and I trusted the Doctors’ and staff expertise and that’s what mattered. If ever in a situation like this again I would not hesitate to use Colonial Vet Hospital again.

Forgot to post a review after we left, the staff here were so kind and caring to our little cat Jinx! They even drew "Welcome Jinx!" on the whiteboard in our room for him, could not recommend them enough!

I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. I took my dog here to get spayed and they did a botched job. I was told to come pick her up around 4:30-5:00pm and not once did I receive a phone call to come and get her, how she was doing and that she was all done. So I call and ask if she’s ready to come home and the lady said yes. Well I go there and the vet calls me back to a room where my dog is sitting in. She tells me that she has to spend the night just so they can monitor her. Not ONCE did these people call and tell me that she needed to spend the night, the lady I spoke to on the phone said she was ready to come home. So that should’ve been my first red flag. So she spent the night and the next morning still no phone call to come and pick her up so I call AGAIN and the lady said “oh yes she’s ready”. So I leave to pick her up and when I get there her incision area is covered in dry blood, they didn’t care to clean it. Well it ripped right open the morning after we picked her up, mind you she had her cone on and was not running jumping or doing anything to be able to open it. They sent me home with 3 pain pills for her and antibiotics that weren’t even strong enough for what she had done. They also didn’t send me home with any calming/anxiety medicine for her knowing what kind of breed she is. So I go back after it reopened and they said it was slightly open when in reality it was more than that (i have pictures of everything). She needed staples or stitches. But i’m no vet so I thought they would do what she needed done. Nope they just glue it back up. Well that night it reopened even worse. I called 4 different times to tell them it opened again and something else needed to be done but nobody picked up the phone. So I got sick of calling and go to a new vet and they couldn’t even believe what it looked like the day I picked her up from the vet and how open and infected it was when I brought her in for them to fix it. They also told me that they don’t recommend this place and that they always “fix the messes they make”. So now after going to this new vet they finally gave her the staples she needed in the first place. I can’t believe this place could mess up a procedure so common. So please consider taking your pet elsewhere because the staff of colonial animal hospital does not care about your pets.

Staff was very friendly and they got me in and got me seeing quickly. If my dog had had anything less serious. I might have been very satisfied with this experience. As it was, I had taken my puppy to another vet because he was still very ill and the treatment that I was given was not working come to find out he had a very serious disease, and the antibiotics that were prescribed were the wrong ones. The Anti flammatory this vet said was no good whether it's because it is gonna interfere with the new anti biotics. Or because they're just not good for this dog.'or this situation. Looking back I felt a little rushed
