How to Save Money at Emergency Veterinary Clinic Destin

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We had to bring our beloved 14 year old dog here as she had a 105.5 fever and was failing. We had been treating with steroids for low platelets but suspected cancer, which she had 2x before. We had to euthanize her and that's where my issues start. Dr Carrol was lovely and explained everything. The tech came in right away talking about which urn we would like, what we would like to do with her remains etc. We did not have enough time to process all of this all the while, she was brought in for us to say our goodbyes. It was disruptive and careless for him to expect us to be deciding all of that at that moment. I would suggest they do that after all is done and the pet parents have a moment to say good bye and spend some time with the pet. It felt like it was all about the money and just not respectful of what we were dealing with. That being said, everyone was lovely and kind until that moment. Please rethink your process so people can say the goodbyes in peace.

Our Bloodhound Lab mix Elvin put his nose where it didnt belong! He was bitten by a poisonous snake. We were lucky enough to realize it happened and had him at the office within 40 minutes. He was taken back immediately. Within 10 minutes we were called back to discuss treatment. The vet was knowledgeable and compassionate. He understood that the dog and my husband would not do well if Elvin stayed overnight. Treatment was started and we picked him up several hours later with meds and instructions. I see some bad reviews on here but people have unreal expectations. I knew several things that night before I got to the vets office. 1- it was going to be expensive. Kids and pets never get sick or hurt until the weekend or after 5pm. 2- Elvin might not make it despite getting there so quickly and the expense. 3- I always want to pay upfront in case things dont go well for my pet. I would be a snivelling mess. Its really not nice to be a snivelling mess in front of other pet parents. It upsets them. 4. These folks are doing a hard job. Im sure they would rather give rabies shots and rub puppy bellies. Instead they are providing a necessary service. Theyre doing the best they can with the information they are given. If I didnt know Elvin was bitten by a poisonus snake it would have taken longer to diagnose him, it may have cost more money, and he could have died while figuring it out. So, Im not offended that when I called I was give a rundown of costs. I appreciated it. I was happy to pay upfront while they took him back. Im thankful that we got to them in time with our beloved Elvin. I would recommend them to anyone with a pet emergency. Thank you so much for taking such good care of our baby

Loved this emergency vet. The vet on call and the techs were kind, and compassionate. I was very pleased with the service. Wait was long but expected at an emergency vet. My only complaint was the front desk girl. Abrupt and not very nice or helpful. Most patrons are very concerned about their animals while visiting an emergency clinic. A compassionate and helpful front desk staff member that shows concern would be a much better fit for your business.

I'm a local and live in FWB. Trigger Warning for those who are reading: pet death/euthanasia My kitty had been fighting the hard battle of liver disease and liver failure all week, and last night (Saturday night) began exhibiting some concerning signs. The woman who was working the front desk (I didn't get her name, but it was on May 27th) was incredibly gentle and sweet when talking to me on the phone, and when getting us signed in. She was incredibly awesome and gentle. My cat, Salami, was seen immediately and soon after I was called back to speak with the veterinarian. I didn't get her name either, but she was an incredibly gentle and warm hearted older woman who used to specialize in cats in Atlanta. She was incredibly honest and upfront with me, explaining more that was going on with him. I knew things weren't looking good at all for my boy and was deep down expecting humane euthanasia. She cried with me as she answered all of my questions and gave me a hug. They let me spend as much private time with my boy that I wanted until we were ready. When the time came, she cried with me as she talked him through everything. I could really tell that this woman truly cared about her job and her patients. She asked permission and then said a beautiful prayer that I believe she said was Turkish, and reassured me that he would be handled with respect. While nobody ever wants to have to do this or go through it, this place made the process very personal and easier. Thank you so much.

Called this morning to ask about care for my dog who has begun itching since being on vacation in Florida. Understanding this isn’t an actual “emergency” but also not wanting my dog to suffer, I asked what the cost is approximately. I was told the flat rate is $132 for a visit plus any additional costs. When I asked if blood work etc. was a requirement, the woman answering the phone rudely stated “I don’t know I’m not looking at the pet”. This lack of service and poor attitude is why I am about to drive one hour away to see a different vet.
