How to Save Money at Southwest Florida Veterinary Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My baby chi and I received the best care at this hospital yesterday- the staff was so helpful and professional without sparing compassion for me and my little dog Loni Peekaboo. I am new to the area, and first came here several months ago for my dogs Cardiology evaluation, and I wasn’t as impressed as I was yesterday- I think they have gotten some better front desk, tech and support staff since my last visit. (The last receptionist was dropping f bombs while I checked in, and the tech doing the history at the time was impatient w me- but I do tend to bring that out in some people lol) 😳 Dr. Stacie Foxwell spent a ton of time with me- making sure I fully understood everything going on, all my options and possible ramifications… and believe me- I’m one of those *extra* pet parents, and she was v accommodating- I thought beyond what was required tbh. She was competent, knowledgeable and humble- not the usual jaded arrogant vets you can run into sometimes at these places. (I’ve met a few..!). I felt like they went the extra mile to reassure me, and I felt like Loni was in good hands the whole time, even when I had to leave her overnight after a laborious surgery that no doubt sent Dr. Stacie home late. I would trust this amazing team again if I ever needed to (hope I don’t!). I didn’t feel like they were trying to upcharge anything (although I did spend a small fortune here) My only complaint is that the waiting room was freezing- I feel myself coming down w a cold after spending 8 hours sitting around there yesterday… and bring your own coffee cup they were all out & I got so desperate I hand washed a used one 😔 Thanks you guys!

My experience at Southwest Florida Veterinary Specialists went beyond amazing. I walked in beyond overwhelmed, beyond lost and scared. This place immediately took us in and not only made sure max my baby had the most amazing care, but my family. They do not need to personally be beyond compassionate and pretty much counselors for a family, but this is what they did for us. They took a horror scene nightmare and made it completely fixed. They are driven for their family’s they take on, compassionate and listen to everything your family wishes. This goes to not only the vet who turned my family’s life around but every single staff member that day. This is the Only ER vet we will ever consider. Please consider this clinic it’s not just a clinic it’s a family of highly trained loving people. Thank you so much again for what you have done for my family. We will forever be grateful.

We had our cardiac follow up today. Our little Chihuahua has degenerative mitral valve disease. The report was very positive and she is stable. Her cardiac doctor and team are wonderful, explaining her condition clearly and giving us treatment options. We feel Sophia is in good hands. Thank you.

I went for a cardiologist work-up for my dog with Dr.Nader, I can not say enough of how happy I am with the complete work up we received. The Dr explained everything, in detail, and discussed the plan. Everyone, the techs, and office staff handled me and my dog with care, professionalism and was very pleasant. I was completely confident that I was getting excellent care. We will continue with Dr Nader with my pups cardiac care. Thank you all.:)))
