How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I definitely recommend coming to this location. My cats are very shy and timid in public, the fact that this location is not inside a Petsmart makes the BIGGEST difference in my cats experience. The staff are lovely and make an effort to make you feel welcomed. If we weren’t moving, this would be our permanent go to location!

Terrible business practices that made a bad situation worse. Signed up with Banfield for their puppy plan. Puppy unexpectedly passed away due to a genetic issue less than two weeks later. Insist in charging an outrageous ($600+) fee to cancel the plan that was used 0 times for our deceased puppy. They made no attempt to find a more amenable solution and showed 0 compassion. Will share this story with anyone who asks my opinion on Banfield and will take every opportunity to recommend that their services are not used.

A “Kawi14R” S

I've been using this clinic for the past 4 years, and I never had a problem with them. I'm sure the doctors and staff treated my dog very well. I'm the kind of owner who doesn't care how much it cost to treat my dog, and I even ask for more stuff to make sure we cover everything to help my dog. I even bought insurance for her from them.  Around 3 years ago, I moved from Boca to Coral Springs, and all these years, I didn't mind driving over an hour to bring my dog to this location, but it seems that today I changed my mind. They call me last week to schedule an annual check-up, and my first response: when is your next available time? So we schedule today at 11:30 AM. I left work, pick up my dog at home, and drove to the clinic, but since I don't live in Boca anymore, I didn't know that they were doing some road construction on the street nearby, so I got stuck for 15 minutes because they closed the street and we had to wait for the construction ppl to open the street again. I arrived at the clinic at 11:40, waited for 3 to 5 minutes to be called, and when they asked me how they could help, I told them I was dropping my dog for her appointment. The girl from the front desk told me: Yeah, but it is almost noon, so... At this moment, I explained the construction situation. and I'm sure they know since it is right next to the clinic, but there was nothing to be done except reschedule. Great, I just lost two hours of my paycheck to bring my dog to this clinic, and I got canceled because I got late 10 minutes? And the reason for me to be late is very reasonable, but it doesn't matter for them, and how about the times that I waited 10 minutes to be called? I just waited and understood the situation. I want to say thank you for taking care of my dog all these years and all the best, but I'm no longer a customer.

They charge $35 monthly for health/wellness plan and say that it covers the general shots but after every single shot they charge extras around $100. For example today i took my dog for a general shot and at the beginning they told me it will cost extra $25 and i was Ok with it but when I went back to pick him up they charged extra $85 as before shot procedure!?! ThAt health plan is a big lie and covers nothing. Even i had the health plan they did not track my dogs important shots like rabies and i ended up calling them. Once you buy a health plan it is impossible to terminate it and you need to wait for a year if you don’t want to pay a termination penalty. Also it is the hardest thing to speak with someone when you call the office . They are also so bad with chewy online prescription orders. Chewy ended up canceling my medicine orders for several times because they were not able to reach out Banfield.
