How to Save Money at Lafayette Companion Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This vet office is fantastic. Everyone from start to finish of each vet visit has been wonderful. They have been understanding and compassionate when it comes to taking care of my two dogs. They truly listen to my concerns and take their time to make sure every pet is looked after. I would highly recommend them for you vet care needs!

Been going here for 14 years with dogs and cats. It was 5 stars back in earlier days. Now with all the out of state people that have moved in to the area the shop is usually too busy to provide the same level of service. Much of the time you have to leave a message when you call in. And trying to get just a few minutes of time on the phone with vet can be a challenge. Re communication and bedside manner, primary vet is great; secondary vets are good. Pricing is high like majority of vets in the area.

I was forced to switch to Lafayette Companion Animal Hospital during one of my pet’s passing, and it was the best switch I ever made. Every staff member I encountered in person and on the phone was compassionate, caring, and everything I needed in that moment of grief, which is something everyone should experience with the individuals caring for and assisting our beloved pets. I cannot wait to take the rest of my fur children to Lafayette Companion Animal Hospital to experience the true love for animals that individuals have in the veterinary field.

I just went to Lafayette Companion this afternoon for an appointment for my puppy. When I called to make her appointment, I specially asked if they charged extra for a certain service that I wanted as well. The receptionist told me no that it was included in her visit. When I got the bill they have over charged me. This is the second time they have done this to me as far as over charging. I only brought a certain amount of cash and when I got the bill, I had to have someone bring the extra cash. I tried speaking to the manager who was the absolute rudest person and should not be dealing with the public. I’m a younger girl and she felt the need to disrespect me and belittle me for not having enough money and preceded to tell me not to bring my puppy there anymore.. We have been bringing our cat here for many years and it is very disappointing how they have treated me with very poor manners we will not be bringing our pets back here again. I definitely would not recommend Lafayette Companion to trust with your pets.

My partner and I had to take our kitty Apollo in twice for back pain. The second time was right after the holidays and they were able to fit us in right away which I did not expect on such short notice. Everyone in the hospital was attentive and helpful and after some X-rays they found out what likely has been causing my poor guy so much pain. The veterinarian and staff made me feel like my cat was in the best hands and she gave us recommendations for supplements and food that would help our guy heal and and have a better quality of life with his condition. For a small hospital with quality care the price is very affordable too. We had a great experience here and will now be taking our dog here as well after having a bad experience at Banfield. Would definitely recommend! Thank you to everyone at Lafayette Companion!
