How to Save Money at Happy Paws Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had to take my English Bulldog to Happy Paws due to a severe elongated soft palate and everted saccules that had made my fur baby's breathing very difficult. We both met with Dr. Wellman and I was thoroughly impressed. Dr. Wellman is very communicative, caring, and passionate about how she cares for her clients. We were able to schedule my bully girl's surgery. Before the surgery, the day of, and even after Dr. Wellman was very attentive wanting to make sure my girl's health was good. I can not say enough positive comments about this place. I am grateful that Dr. Wellman was able to save my bully girl and make her breathing already infinitely better in a short amount of time after the surgery. If you have a bulldog, pug, or any short nosed breed of dog....Dr. Wellman is very knowledgable and she will look after your pet as if they were her own!

In my opinion, Dr. Wellman is a terrible vet who doesn’t know what she is doing. She nearly killed my cat with a bad prescription and previously said he only had 2-3 months to live, was encouraging me towards euthanasia, and it’s a year later and my kitty still enjoys his days. Appointments at her office last an exceptionally long time because she’s constantly looking up things on her phone or leaves to do research abandoning you and your pet in the exam room to wait. I’ve had multiple pets and vets (I’ve needed to change vets after moving) and have never had such an awful experience as I did with Dr. Wellman. She’s so bad that after an appointment, she’ll tell you to come back the next day and pay for another appointment because she didn’t know what she was doing in the first. When Dr. Wellman finally guesses at what’s going on with your pet, she’ll send you an email. And if you have questions, the back and forth of emails can take well over a week therefore delaying treatment. Why can’t she just make a simple phone call which will save so much time? That’s what other vets do. Also, the Hospital Manager, dispenses incorrect veterinary advice via email and possibly harmed my cat’s health. There has been constant staff turnover. I’ve shown up to appointments only to be sent home because there was an office error and the person who made it was no longer employed there. Because she’s the only vet at the clinic, if she’s out of the office which seems to happen regularly, too bad for you and your pet, you’ll have to wait until whenever she returns. Save yourself and your pet some grief and pain and find another veterinarian.

Dr. Wellman and her team are exceptional. I have had several pretty severe issues/emergencies with my French Bulldog and she provides excellent care and compassion. I am beyond thankful I found her a couple of years ago!

You can tell how much Dr. Wellman and staff love animals by the way they treat their patients! They are always so sweet to our 'fraidy cats and we appreciated how well they take care of them when they have to go under for dental cleaning -- made us feel a lot more comfortable!

I have had many vets in the past but I have never been as happy as I am with Happy Paws. Dr. Wellman is one of the most dedicated and caring vets I have had. She could tell how important my dog is to me and always takes the time to answer all my questions and concerns. I can tell her and her staff really care about the animals as well. Milton even remembered her and was slightly less stressed out when she was around, even though he knew she might poke him with needles.
