How to Save Money at Austin Bluffs Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve been going to Austin Bluffs Animal Clinic since 2011 and their entire staff is amazing. From the front of house, to the techs and the Vets. I’ve been there for everything from check ups, to new puppies, neuters, to end of life with my 14yr old cat Marley, which they treated with absolute reverence and care. They treat you and your babies like family every time they see you. What drew me in was their specialty in cats - what has kept me there is their devotion to animals and the excellent care they provide. There is nothing bad that I have to say about this clinic and all the staff I’ve encountered over the years. There is no one I trust more with the well being of my animals.

My experience at Austin Bluffs Animal Clinic was amazing! The front desk was so nice and caring when we first arrived and Dr. Dorsett is such a kind hearted soul. She treated our cat like her own and took her time to figure out what was wrong. Thank you so much!

I’ve been going to the same veterinary clinic now for the last 10 years. They’ve been so booked up. They were not able to get my puppy in within 30 days. So I found Austin Bluffs animal clinic on Google and I called them. They were able to get her in within two weeks and the only reason it was out that long was because I needed a Saturday appointment. Which is so nice that they have those available because I work during the work week and I’m unable to make it otherwise. The doctor answered every one of my questions that I had. She also asked me if I had any other questions and I said no. I was surprised because it’s just not what I’m used to getting. My puppy hadn’t been eating kibble and I was concerned about that. She gave me sample bags of food to try to see if she would eat any of those. The sample bags were actually larger than I thought they would be. They were 2 pounds. I just bought in a pound and a half bag for $22 so that was actually rather shocking, that’s what they gave me for free. They were just so friendly and knowledgeable. Even though it’s an hour away from my house, going forward, I will be taking all of my animals here. I highly recommend them to anyone.

There is so much to say. My cat is my baby, and this was her first medcal procedure. Needless to say, I was more traumatized than she was. The intake tech was very understanding, and patiently took time to let my cat adjust and feel comfortable, as well as answering my questions and reassuring me. Even the front-desk people soothed my trepidation, so I felt confident that my darling would be returned to me in good condition. They even called the following day to ask how WE were doing. I can' t sing their praises loudly enough. Oh, and they even have a separate entrance for cats and dogs!
