How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Always clean, staff efficient, friendly and caring, excellent veterinary care. Annual cost includes so many things, and the total is less than a full service teeth cleaning every year. Recommend this practice.

Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They are very sweet. With our pups. Only thing I wish is that they update their primary office and phone line to their new location since they closed the first location.

Called, sat on hold 15 minutes. Got there by car, before they picked up phone. Then inside, no one up front to help me. Stood there until someone came out to get an animal. Then had to wait until all animals were dealt with..Only wanted a prescription card for my cat. Took 2 minutes. Waited 10 + 15 minutes on hold. Good business practice. Nope. Then found out they don't carry prescription food I need and now Petsmart, who used to carry it will no longer after May. Even tho you can still go to Banfield and get prescription card. Why not?? Disgusted by whole situation.

I am sad to say, do not put your pets health in Banfield care. I needed medication refilled for my dog, I called in for a refill and they said they would call when ready in 2 days. No call. After 5 days I called to inquire and was told the meds weren't available because they didn't ship in the delivery and to call Santa Rosa. Called SR and they were closed during regular business hours. Called back to R P to get the prescription so I could get the meds filled at another place to find out they were also closed during regular business hours with in 30 minutes of my original call. After calling Pets Mart to ask what is going on I'm told they are only open 2 days a week due to illness. Strange that both locations are closed during regular business hours with no explanation. Now I have to go to another vet, pay for a new client/pet appointment in order to get the meds that I had just had an appointment 30 days prior for my dog. I'm having to take time off of work, pay for another vet visit, my dog is paying for it because she will have been without her meds for 5 days by the time I was luckily able to get in as an emergency with a different vet. Her health is not a priority to Banfield in my opinion. I am now switching vets. Banfield is not there to care for your pet. Don't put your animal or yourself through the hassle. All totaled I will be out over $600 dollars for a prescription that should have been $30.

Amazing service, after finding this office randomly recently we will now always be taking our dog here. All of the vets we've worked with have been great, the front desk staff is extremely helpful, they got us in last minute on more than one occasion when we were in a panic about getting a vaccine in time, and have always been extremely transparent about fees, etc., and worked with us to give us the best option possible. Grateful to have found them
