How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We just moved to SCV two weeks ago and were in desperate need of a vet as our long time office changed hands and well….. as of yesterday Banfield is our new spot! My sister swears by them in San Diego so I called yesterday and SURPRISE!!! Thomas answered the phone. I don’t understand the negative post because not only did he explain the plans to me very detailed and professionally, he was able to ask the dr to give us the pills my baby needed until Fridays appointment, something our old vet would do, no issues!! I walked in to grab the plans and see if my request was going to be approved and each person, Thomas included, were extremely welcoming and happy. I walked out and told my other half…. THIS IS OUR NEW PLACE!

This corporate company has not resolved any of my issues nor has the company returned my email about my issue correctly besides "because you want to send your plan you have to pay for the services you used $1000+" after the location her didn't comply with my plan and even then it was breached. Because it was breached because they clinic manager said sorry and gave her staff a slap on the wrist I have to pay for the whole year because they don't know how to settle or understand or even have a live agent call to get this issue resolved with my plan. Because I'm sure everyone 1 star review has the same thing. Emails banifield care. Just for them to not answer and even then to bill me for what they breached on my plan. This place is a waste of money and a waste of time for animals to even be seen. The clinical manager wanted me to make sure we know it's for our animal but it's also the service you give and the response from the staff to help make things easier and to get it done. The only reason I'm here again is because no matter what you guys rate them or try to say about they're prices they don't care because it's the "plan we get"

I Give this 3 stars only because the vet herself was very detailed in my cats exam and I had no issues. The only issue I had was the receptionist Thomas. I wanted my cat to come in due to him vomiting. I was told that in order for my cat to be seen I have to pay $200+ before we bring him in order to be seen (vets words so he said). He got irritated which i’m confused why when he’s a receptionist while i’m asking him questions about my cats plan. He passed the phone and the other women informed me that “they’re not refusing service she’s just advising it for the service but you can refuse”. We weren’t given the option to refuse the tests that are $200+ til this women’s told us that it’s ok to say we don’t need it when i told him 3 times on the phone before he passed it I don’t want it. Even being there in person we saw him being rude to other people on the phone and in person. There is no miscommunication for anyone besides him. If that’s the case of his bad energy and being irritated then maybe he shouldn’t be a veterinarian receptionist because it seems like a hard chore for him to do there.
