How to Save Money at Humane Society-San Bernardino

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had to put my kitty down yesterday and the staff was so amazing. The art work they have in the room will break your heart even more but it’s so beautiful. They allowed me to hold him one last time. They were so nice and understanding. I will FOREVER use this place for any pet needs. I don’t care I love far away, they left a lasting impression. Thank you so much. Losing a pet is so hard. They give you the support you need. Thank you again.

I caught a feral cat and brought it according to their instructions to the clinic and they made me wait in the hot sun on the dog side with no information. I knocked on the door 3 times just to have my questions answered and nobody opened the door. I finally got in as someone was going out and the help was terrible. Nobody took my name or gave me information on where to wait and for how long. They said they’d call me but never took my name or number. I waited for over an hour and they wouldn't take her after all. They were full of surgery appointments and didn't tell me until 9:30 when I got there at 7:45. I was so mad because feral cats can't get appointments, otherwise I would have made one…but how do you know when you’ll catch them? I explained to them that it took two weeks to catch her and that she's been in the trap all night and all morning. Their customer service used to be 10/10, but today it was 1/10. The front desk lady told me to pour more water and food in her bowl and keep her in the cage until tomorrow and try again with no guarantee they'll take her. I was so mad! There needs to be a feral cat program there like they advertise on their website. But feral cats are treated like walk in appointments and maybe they’ll get to you, maybe they won’t. It’s not easy to catch feral cats but spaying them is the biggest solution to overcrowded shelters. They could care less and it shows on their faces…unkind. I work nights and don’t have all day to drive to the next clinic who’ll take a feral cat that minute, and in this heat, I can’t keep her in the cage driving everywhere. So, I let the cat out when I got home. I’ll see kittens in a few months I’m sure. Thanks Humane Society!

Kind staff but they should advise their customer service that you only have a 10 min grace to sign in before your appt and there will be no EXCEPTIONS. This way you have the option to cancel your appt so you don't waste your time after driving for 30 min..that would be the customer friendly way. But we all know these days that has gone out the window.

What can I say. I had to euthanize my 17 year old faithful pom Chloé. The staff was very understanding and caring. They made the process so much better. I recommend this clinic for any of your pet needs. Thank you for your services. I will always remember Chloé and be forever thankful for giving me peace of mind in my decision.

I’ve been coming here for years, and have never had any problems and have recommended their service to many. However recently I’ve had interactions with staff regarding my sick pet that made me feel like my worry was over reacting,m. After taking my pet to another vet it turns out she’s not going to make it, and i have to schedule a euthanasia. I’ve been trying to contact human society for a week now to schedule an appointment, have left two voicemails, and still have not been able to contact them.
