How to Save Money at General Dog & Cat Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Would not recommend this place to anyone at all! Doctor doesn’t like his job and does not care for animals at all and does not even examine the patients thoroughly. Not a good place at all

I want to give my whole hearted thanks to everyone there !!! A few months back, my friend's dog got shot in the face by San Bernardino Police for NO other reason than to kill the dog , which was tied up !! Animal control came to pick up the animal and that wonderful dog was still alive and fighting hard to stay that way !! The animal control brought her here and they did miracles for her !! My friend had several other dogs and the only way she would be able to still see her was if i adopted her, which I did. However, both my friend and I are both out of work and couldn't afford all the cost of her care. These wonderful people understood the whole situation and truly care about animals and worked with me on the cost of her care !! I am very happy to say that me and my friend's dog has healed beautifully and is a very happy and lucky dog to be alive thanks totally to this wonderful and caring Veterinarian!!! We are forever greatful for helping her and being so generous !!! Thank you so so much !! Sincerely, Dana Goodall and Paws !!!

Will edit later so far loving service @16:29 on 05 15 15 Edit So the service here was a bit shaky, but it got better. There was a mistake where the gave the wrong kitten to the wrong person; my kitten to another person. Its okay, both looked identical from the same litter so I get it. They corrected it asap, were upfront and honest about the mistake. Even treated me sickly kitten with antibiotics free of charge since she had a bad kennel cough. I paid for her to get fixed but wasn't able to being that she was sick...it's been months and I'd forgotten until recently to set an appointment. Now that she's better I will call. I'm surprised they didn't contact me about it but I think they feared the kitten may have been too sick and died. She was in terrible shape and I was a worried mess for a week until she started improving. Love the staff, the service, etc!

Went to this vet today for our puppy's broken toenail. Generally unprofessional, and then the vet didn't even really examine our pup before sending one of the office workers in with a list of recommended services (including anesthesia for our 12 week old pup!) that totaled up to $567! Decided we'd seek a second opinion. Paid the $40 office visit fee to get out of there, and prayed our baby hadn't been exposed to parvo. Went elsewhere, where the nail was removed, cleaned, received antibiotics, puppy shots, dewormed her...well, they were just awesome. $81 later, we couldn't believe we'd even considered what GD&C had suggested. Won't ever go back.

The AMAZING doctors and LOVING staff saved my dog's life..... two times!!! The first time my dog had terrible bronchitis, I thought he wouldn't survive but doctors and staff went the extra mile and saved him. The second time my dog had been in a road accident, I brought him to the hospital hurt, in shock and paralyzed. Thanks to the wonderful treatment here he is walking, running and enjoying life. I LOVE THIS HOSPITAL!!!
