How to Save Money at Rancho West Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We have been coming here since they opened. Always had a good relationship with Dr. Stiles. Until today. My wife left a poor review based on an experience that we had, and the office manager spoke to me regarding it. I explained where the feeling came from, and she claimed to still want our business. We brought our senior cat in to see Dr. Stiles regarding some labored breathing and weight loss. No issues during the first portion of the meeting, explaining we should do some bloodwork. We agreed to the $225 bloodwork and urine panel. After completing the test, she came into the room to tell us that our cat is dying of what is likely cancer and doesn't have much time and should likely be put down to prevent extra suffering. In the same 5 minute conversation, she felt it was appropriate to confront my wife and I about the review. In the same conversation that she just let us know our cat is dying! How insensitive can a person get? In one sentence, claim to not be in it for the money, but allow us to come in, spend $300, and then tell us that she's uncomfortable seeing us in the office! If she was not happy with the review, the time to discuss it with us is not when telling us our cat is dying. We will never be back and I don't recommend any person come here. I refuse to support a vet who is that insensitive because clearly she only cares about how she feels and not how the families of the animals she sees feel.

Awesome Veterinarian. She waited for us at closing time to help us say a beautiful goodbye to our 15 year old 3.5# Yorkie. She started having a seizure and didn't stop. They are awesome there.

A few months ago the staff at Rancho West Animal Hospital, specifically Dr. Stiles, was recommended by my local animal clinic to treat my partners dog. After our initial visit, I could see why. The staff here are top notch, very polite and professional. And Dr. Stiles is incredibly knowledgeable, kind and compassionate. In Jan 2022 my own senior pup, Kiba, was suddenly very sick by an unknown illness. I was able to see Dr. Stiles within days, and she broke the very difficult news that he had an aggressive form of cancer. With Dr. Stiles knowledge, we were able to make my pup comfortable and he came home with me. The medicine helped him tremendously! He was active again, eating more and even his usual vocal and playful self. I was able to enjoy 6 more beautiful weeks with him, more time than I thought we had until he took a turn for the worse. I brought him back to see Dr. Stiles and his condition had worsened despite how hard he fought for me. And on 3/11 my beautiful pup crossed the rainbow bridge surrounded by the family that loves him. So thank you to the staff and to Dr. Stiles at Rancho West Animal Hospital. For taking care of my Kiba, and for the beautiful card I received in the mail a couple weeks later. My family and I appreciate everything you did for him, and for me.
