How to Save on Veterinary Costs at Veterinary Emergency Group
Preventive care
Routine wellness exams can help identify health issues early, often before they become more serious or expensive to treat. Regular checkups are one of the most effective ways to manage long term veterinary costs.
Compare prescription pricing
Some pet medications prescribed at veterinary clinics may also be available through local or online pharmacies. It can be helpful to compare pricing when appropriate to reduce ongoing medication costs.
Consider pet insurance
Pet insurance may help cover a portion of eligible veterinary expenses depending on the plan, including accidents, illnesses, and in some cases preventive care. Coverage details, reimbursement levels, and deductibles vary by provider.

Getting to Know Your Veterinarian
Choosing a veterinarian is an important decision for pet parents. A strong vet relationship is built on trust, communication, and understanding your pet’s individual needs.
Experience
Ask whether the clinic has experience treating your specific type of pet, since care can vary between dogs, cats, and pocket pets.
Emergency Care Procedures
It’s helpful to understand how the clinic handles after-hours emergencies, including whether they provide emergency services or refer to nearby emergency hospitals.
Communication Preferences
Ask how the clinic communicates with pet parents, including updates, test results, and follow up questions.
Breed Specific Health Considerations
Some breeds may be more prone to certain health conditions. Early awareness can help with prevention and early treatment.
Facility Tour
If available, touring the clinic can help you and your pet feel more comfortable before the first visit.

Our vet sent our dog Violet here to have an infected wound cleaned out and treated. We were welcomed warmly and Violet was loved and taken care of SO well. They found some complications with her that had nothing to do with the wound, but they took the time to see what was going on with her and give us information on how to follow up with what appears to be a long-term health situation. All of the doctors and nurses knew her by name and were so sweet to her. They have private rooms and humans can even stay overnight with their pets. We can be there while procedures are done, which was helpful and interesting for us. I felt very confident and relieved that they were doing good work on Violet. We were all treated with respect and compassion, for which I am very grateful. Bonus: There's a State of Mind Pizza place and Starbucks right across the street, plus other places to eat if you're there awhile.

Very, very impressed with all aspects of my experience this morning with my Weimaraner Sadie. She had a red eye with some discharge and swelling. Thought it best not to wait for our vet appointment the next day. The staff and facility are amazing. Sadie is somewhat shy but she took to them immediately. Being able to stay with her is a huge plus. Many thanks to Dr. Sparks, Amy Grace, Regan and all involved. This was not a life or death emergency but if I am ever in that situation, there is no other place to trust my pets to. Turned out that Sadie had some sort of irritation which will resolve quickly with meds.

I had an emergency with my cat Sundae, and the team at VEG ER in St. Pete was nothing short of incredible. From the moment we walked in, we were treated with compassion, urgency, and genuine care—not just for Sundae, but for us as worried pet parents. A huge thank you to Dr. Nelson, Brittany C, Rachel, and Mike—their team effort in Sundae’s care made all the difference. They kept us informed every step of the way, made sure Sundae was as comfortable as possible, and somehow managed to ease our stress during a really scary time. It felt like we were all in it together, and that meant everything. On top of their exceptional care, they also did their best to work with our budget and offer options without ever making us feel pressured. That kind of understanding and flexibility is so rare, and we truly appreciated it. We’re beyond grateful for the kindness, professionalism, and heart this team showed. Thank you for being there when we needed it most.

Our experience was wonderful and well beyond what I was expecting. Everyone we interacted with was very kind, helpful, and answered all of our questions. I truly don't understand the one person stating Dr. Sparks was not empathetic or compassionate with the reviewer and her dog. From everyone else's experience, including mine, Dr. Sparks was extremely kind and compassionate. Herd to believe that reviewer. We were immediately greeted at the door and taken to an exam room. In less than a couple of minutes the nurse (or vet tech?) came into the exam room and she asked a few questions to find out what the issue was. She was so sweet with Hunter. A couple of minutes after her arrival, Dr. Sparks introduced herself and everything went so smoothly. Plus, they have coffee, filtered water, and really good cookies for us humans. The at-home treatment for Hunter, our orange tabby, was explained very well and we were shown how to apply the eye drops and pain medicine so we knew exactly what to do. Thank you to the staff for helping calm our nerves about Hunter's eye issue. Special thanks to Dr. Sparks for being so kind and sweet with Hunter. Also for giving us all of the information we needed at the time and the detailed instructions for taking care of Hunter at home. This is by far the best veterinary staff and facility I have ever encountered.

The staff and Doctor that saw my chicken at 2AM are AMAZING!! The doctor did a great job helping me on the phone before I made the 45min drive. I felt like I was in excellent hands the whole time. My sweet Luna needed surgery and I am so thankful we came here. Any animal, anytime. These are the people you can trust!! Thank you so much VEG!!!
