How to Save Money at Blue Cross Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We adore this vet clinic. They are kind, efficient and knowledgeable. They don’t push unnecessary procedures and their fees are extraordinarily reasonable. Lana had a great time at her first vet visit and our doctor also asked after our older cat he’d treated weeks before. We are so happy we found them!

I’m here to provide a negative review of Blue Cross Pet Hospital in North Hollywood. My negative review is a reflection of my experience as a long-time customer (5+ years, 2 cats) of this pet hospital that has witnessed a severe decline in quality of care and operations. In the past, this pet hospital was a place that I trusted and that I felt genuinely cared about the welfare of the animals they saw. Sadly, that is no longer the case and it now operates like a business desperate to squeeze every cent they can out of customers and providing lower quality care at the same time. During my recent visits, I noticed a significant lack of attention and care from the staff, with little regard for the concerns I had about my pet's conditions. This hospital seemed to care less about pet care and instead, their primary focus is hard selling numerous tests with high fees, many of these seemed completely irrelevant for the care of my pets. Just left me feeling empty after getting a hard sell on multiple $200+ blood tests to only have them tell you that it didn’t tell them anything. Another issue I’ve recently had is that they don’t really allow vet prescriptions to be refilled without significant hassle. Previously you could get a refill without issue if you have had your pet in recently and it’s been up to date on its necessary shots, etc. Now they force you to get an exam and unnecessary bloodwork every time you need a refill. Doesn’t matter if the pet just had an exam/blood tests weeks ago. Doesn’t matter if it’s the same prescription that they’ve given to your pet for years. They appear to not care at all anymore. I write this review to warn other pet owners so they aren’t surprised when this hospital tries to take you to the ringer and shake you down for every cent you have. I don’t know what happened, but sometime in the past 2 years this hospital completely changed their focus from providing the good care to capturing the most revenue possible. It’s been disheartening to see the decline. I would recommend seeking care at another facility if reasonably possible. I think it a facility now where you are paying for a premium product, but receiving mediocre care after sitting through a sales presentation.

Not my jam when it comes to vets. They always have appointments which is nice but, we went in since my dog is prone to ear infections and were just consistently talked down too about the care of my animals. They were really trying to just sell extra medicine and extra treatments and SURGERIES during my appointment. I’ve never had a vet look at my healthy weight dog and say “why don’t you guys go on hikes,” when we go on 2 miles walks everyday. I was not a fan of the treatment. Not worth the money. She also fed my dog with allergies a regular treat without asking me. Not a good look. Also, don’t question what people put on their paperwork in terms of dog breed.

Stay away from doctor Howe!!! I brought in my cat who had a terrible cut on his paw and a broken nail. After waiting for an hour, the doctor told me that she wasn't able to examine my cat because he was anxious and fearful. Duh, the cat is in pain?!!! She then persisted to give me a 10 minute aggressive and sarcastic speech on how I need to neuter my cat. I told her, I brought my cat for an emergency and I would like that to be taken care of first. She told me she needs to sedate my cat and keep her overnight. Suggested $1000 worth of nonsense. After waiting an hour and further torturing my cat, I ended up asking for pain medication and left. Still paid the exam fee even though they didn't even examine my cat. Overall doctor Howe was horrible, mean, and aggressive. Front desk is super nice though.

I felt very good bringing my sweet kitty Caesar here. Blue Cross was recommended by a friend after my wife and I had a few bad experiences elsewhere. They were able to get us in on a Sunday despite not having an appointment and we were very grateful. Definitely recommend!
