How to Save Money at Baker Ranch Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our pup Moo was recently diagnosed with Diabetes. I was referred to Baker Ranch Animal Hospital by a friend that has had. A great experience with Dr Bakers office. I can share that the recommendation is warranted. The office has a personalized, boutique feel to it. The staff is warm and welcoming. The exam rooms feel more like mini dog hotels than a vet office 😃. Our vet Dr Wilson was very thorough in discussing how she wants to approach our diabetic treatment for Moo. An added plus is that the office offers 3 monthly subscription tiers of wellness programs. The plans are pretty comprehensive with some including X-rays, ultrasounds and dental work. Having a diabetic pip I know that I will be visiting the office frequently so their plans with covered exams made financial sense for us. The personal touch of having a Moo cow drawn on our goody bag is indicative of the personal touch this office offers.

The staff here is incredible and did everything they possibly could to make sure our pup was comfortable. I really appreciated that the waiting room wasn't full of dogs causing more anxiety. It also didn't smell bad (didn't smell like anything at all actually which is the best smell)! They even had air purifiers in the exam rooms. Also, not being required to put the dog on a table 4 feet in the air really made the dog a lot more comfortable. We appreciated all the little touches that made this place different. You can really tell that they care about the comfort of the animals that come in for help.

If you want to be scammed, come here! I came here yesterday about a concern about my kitten’s respiratory infection. I kept expressing concerns and the Doctor kept seeming to invalidate and brushing it off that it was not that “severe” on the basis that she seemed “happy”……. My vet friend recommended me to ask for an antibiotic treatment called Clavamox and when I asked she just kept brushing off my concerns. I asked to have them just in case the symptoms were to get worse. She refused and basically did nothing all I did was get a probiotic and flea treatment. She said I could do a swab test that would take up to a week to come back which would not be helpful toward helping her infection in the meanwhile if she doesn’t want to prescribe any medication. All that for $130. Now today she won’t eat and her symptoms seem even worse. When I call the front desk girl is laughing silently on the phone at my distress and she says the Doctor “doesn’t feel comfortable prescribing antibiotics” without seeing her even though she saw her 24 hours ago. They also told me they would still charge me an examination fee AGAIN even though I am back purely because of their refusal to take my cat’s sickness as serious as they should have. I am only here again because she is very sick and her health is my priority. Just wished they also made her health feel like a priority yesterday instead of invalidating my concerns. I spoke to the Supervisor and not surprised how she claims to “hear my concerns” but basically said yeah you still have to pay the exam fee even though you were here yesterday. I would not come again here. Update: The Doctor wants to prescribe her the EXACT same antibiotic that I requested that was recommended by my vet friend. What a joke. She is trying to tell me she didn’t have this nasal discharge yesterday despite my telling her she has had it for the past few days I just clean her nose often. So ridiculous. The “examination” was under 2 minutes all she did was really look at her discharge. Another ~$130 down the drain. Had she listened to my concerns initially I would not have to come here again and spend all this money. This place just wants to scam you. Really disappointed.

So incredibly kind and welcoming!! I’m a very paranoid fur-parent, my cat is my child and to see the staff treat her with such clear affection and kindness was a huge relief. They gave me multiple options, not trying to break the bank with my cat’s care and provided me with supplement information for my sweet baby. The staff made her a lovely hand drawn welcome bag, decorated with flowers and a little smiling sun with her name. The inside is gorgeous, the rooms are lovely and the doctor was even lovelier!! Take your baby here!!
