How to Save Money at VCA La Mirada Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I rescued 2 sick kittens. The next day I called VCA La Mirada and they were able to get me in that morning. I have used a different popular vet in Whitter for a while, but over the years it has been harder and harder to get in, not to mention the cost of this vet. I was so happy to be able to take the kittens in immediately. The office was so clean and the staff was amazing. I was not rushed and every thing was explained in detail. The office was also able to give some resources for the kittens and their feral parents. It was a refreshing change from vets in the past. I even received a follow up text to see how the kittens were doing (never had this before). The cost was also very manageable. Thanks La MIrada VCA :)

This place and the staff are awesome. My baby Bubbers passed away suddenly at home on 6/12/23. He was my whole whole world for 9yrs. I was devastated. Heartbroken and sobbing I brought my baby to VCA La Mirada animal hospital. Right away staff tended to me and took me to a private room where they had me sign some papers for his cremation. Then they let me kiss my baby and say goodbye. A few minutes later they brought me my babies favorite stuffed animal that was in the basket with him. A week later I was called he was ready to be picked up. When I got there they brought him out to me in a cute little bag. When I got to the car I opened the bag there was a beautiful little cedar box with an engraved name plate on it with his ashes inside. a certificate with his name. They also gave me a little ceramic disk that they made with his paw print and a stand for display. And a little package of forget-me-not seeds. To top it off they had the best price of all the other places I called. If you have a pet /family member this is the place to bring them. Thank you VCA. 5 stars.

I'd give no stars if it were possible... Please reconsider taking your pets somewhere else VCA La Mirada should be ashamed of themselves. The medical director Dr. Marlyn Girgis has proven herself to be not only incompetent but ignorant and should not be able to practice veterinary medicine. She prescribed a medicine to a cat that is very well known in the veterinary world of medicine to be very dangerous without taking extreme caution in the administration of it. Not only did she neglect to inform the patient of this but she denied it after the fact that this was the issue. Dr. Girgis has caused this family extreme financial strife to try and save their pets life. Who will now be changed forever because of the pure ignorance of neglect for the animal's welfare. The medicine was given not as a last alternative but for a preventive measure. It was in no means or way necessary. When the patient did their research they were assured their pets illness was due to the medication. When questioned to the doctor, Dr. Girgis plainly ignored them and instead charged them a lot of money for unnecessary testing. Since then, other veterinarians and specialists have confirmed that Dr. Girgis indeed should have never prescribed this to their pet and filed malpractice suit against her. This whole situation should have never of happened. At the very least VCA and Dr. Girgis should try to rectify what they can at this point but that has not happened. It has been a nightmare. So please, I urge you to highly reconsider you go elsewhere. Do your research. We have to be our pet's advocate.

I write this review to educate and forewarn any current or future clients of VCA La Mirada of the incompetence, malpractice and ignorance of their medical director, Dr. Marlyn Girgis. Having placed my trust in the hands of a professional, Dr. Girgis prescribed a very dangerous medication as a “preventative measure” for my pet. Should I have been properly educated on the dangers of this medication, I would have NEVER risked putting my pet on this medication. When brought to her attention, Dr. Girgis ignorantly and brazenly denied the medication as the cause of my pet’s complications. Consequently, after taking my pet to another VCA for further testing, their VERY OWN doctors and surgeons confirmed my pet’s complications were the direct result of the medication and the incompetence of Dr. Girgis. What’s very upsetting is that the dangers of this medication and it’s use are common knowledge in the veterinary medical world. Yet, Dr. Girgis seemed to be completely ignorant or, even worse, suspiciously dismissive of her choice to use that medicine. This is extremely worrisome, given the fact she is the medical director. Consequently, the result of her malpractice has left us heartbroken and financially debilitated to undo the harm she has caused my pet and all who were involved. Given the direct and undeniable facts that her incompetence has destroyed my life and forever debilitated my pet’s life, VCA La Mirada has done NOTHING to even try to resolve the situation. Dr. Girgis and VCA La Mirada should be ashamed of themselves for their lack of professionalism, incompetence and lack of care/common knowledge in practicing veterinary medicine.

Beware: this is very much FOR-Profit business. As I read in other reviews, if you can't pay, then there is NO compassion. Our dog was cared for by this vet at this location prior to our adopting the rescue. Soooo they have records and previous examination. But this vet won't give any information on this dog unless we pay for lots of bloodwork and x-rays. And of course this dog does not qualify for the wellness program because she has problems... ok what problems??? They won't give me that info. So I ask well, you have a senior wellness package that is much more expensive every month for the senior dog. How many senior dogs do NOT have health issues?? But I was informed that my dog won't qualify. Why does my dog not qualify. I am really shocked. Why do they help with rescues when they won't care about the animal once its adopted? Oh wait at their very high and full price they will? One can only speculate why they bother with rescues. They can't even give suggestions for lower cost vet care when asked. Beware...
