How to Save Money at Hayward Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I took my pet here on a visit for an obvious and clear problem he had and they declined him proper treatment because they “claimed” they did not know what was the problem even after both the doctor AND the vet assistant regurgitated the same information of what they firmly believed the cause was. They then suggested a way more expensive procedure for something that had a simple and easy procedure, leading me to believe that this clinic only is focused on draining your wallet. Additionally, the vet assistant was pretty rude in terms of relaying the concerns to us and definitely trying take us feel guilty about it so that we would pay up the money for the expensive procedure.

I took my cat, Monster there for a follow up after he had spend the night at the emergency hospital. Let me just say though I live in Oakland I will be making the half hour drive out to Hayward Animal Clinic for all my cats vet needs. I like them that much. They are kind and professional and everything you would want in someone looking after your animal.

I have been bringing my pets here for the last couple of years. Service has been a mix of good and bad experiences but I kept coming back because there was more good than bad, however this last experience was enough to make me seek attention for my pets elsewhere. I took my dog in for a limp in his arm and a mass on his private area. He was seen by Dr. Iqvinder Gill whom tried to convince me that the mass would have to get tested in order to determine if it’s malignant or not. I explained to him multiple times that my dog previously had a mass in the same location that tested malignant and I was told it would come back, hence why I took him back into the vet. The doctor had to check his files multiple times to confirm. In regards to the plan of action, verbally the doctor gave an estimate of around $1,800 - $2,200 and when I received an email estimate later that night it was around $3,400 which already included a $1,600 discount. I called back as soon as possible to clarify what exactly they were including and turns out that the doctor had included more than necessary, bringing it down to $2,600-$3,000, without a discount. I requested to have the clinics other doctor, Dr. Sirtaj Gill who I had more positive experiences with previouslly, care for my dog since I was concerned that Dr. Iqvinder Gill maybe wasn’t fully understanding my concerns about my pet and the request was denied so I ended up only getting the X-rays done to take a look into his leg. The results were emailed to me a few days later and I tried calling the clinic multiple times to go over the results and was informed that the doctor would call me back to go over it. A week passed and still no call. To this day, still no call. I requested my dogs file and don’t intend to return.
