How to Save Money at Animal Urgent Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had to take my senior dog Elaine here a few years ago when she was in heart failure. The staff was very compassionate. We ended up having to put her down but got to be with her for her last moments.

It’s weird to say I “Love” this place but the staff is great, they always seem to be doing their best. It’s a stressful environment and the staff stays cool and collected. The care seems great, we’ve never had an issue and they’re responsive. Great in a pinch. Of course you’re paying a premium for the ‘urgent’ care but it’s worth it if your pet needs to be seen immediately and can’t get an appointment at your normal vet.

My heart is full of so much love as this place saved my little baby’s life!!!! Dr. Thompson and Adam are truly ANGELS & could not thank them enough for their support, kindness, and willingness to work with me to help me bring my baby home. I didn’t interact with Dr. Thompson much, but her care & love for animals was shown through her actions and communication with Adam. Adam is who I mostly dealt with, and his bedside manner and understanding was unmatchable. I walked in very upset, distressed and worried I was going to loose my Kitty, but Adam listened to me and communicated everything with such grace and kindness. He worked with me so I was able to bring Berlioz home that night and checked in the following day to make sure he was recovering. On top of that, the front desk girls were also very kind and sweet and super helpful with my questions. If my baby is ever in an urgent situation again (god forbid!!!), this is the first place I will go again. Thank you Animal Urgent Care!!!!

At the recommendation of my dogs primary vet I took my dog Zeus here after several days of his not doing well. I am so glad that I did. The process and service from start to finish was wonderful. I found the online appointment system a bit confusing at first so i called and they were great with walking me through the process. While I am sure no animal owner wants or likes to do a drop off of their animal I totally understand in todays world that it is more of the norm. Once I arrived I followed the instructions on the QR coded sign and within minutes a tech came out and took my dog inside. The tech was wonderful and gentle with him and really made him feel comfortable as she took him. I was called shortly after to give me an update on vitals and overall condition which really helped put my mind at ease. Another short while late I received another update as to his condition and possible tests that might need to be run. I really liked the way that they handle the information process. They e-mailed me an estimate of services they recommended then once I reviewed it they called me to discuss them and what they all were and what they did. The thing that I really liked was that they did not pressure me or make me feel that I HAD to do any of what they were recommending. They were also great about taking the time to explain it all. At no point did I feel rushed off the phone and was free to ask questions with the Vet themselves. After we discussed what we needed to do and approved some of the recommendations they moved forward. Shortly there after we were once again updated as to the status of our loved one. We then received another call from the vet directly to further discuss his condition. After several of these wonderful interactions we were able to pick up our pet. Unfortunately the outcome for us was to have to put him down a few weeks later. In short. Everyone we came in contact with here was amazing. The billing was laid out simple and explained in detail. The staff was wonderful and friendly as well as comforting. The only thing I would note is that they parking lot is very tight so if you have a truck or large SUV you may need to think about some street parking.

Expensive but a really solid emergency option. The staff is always pleasant and accommodating and very patient with questions and making sure you understand home care instructions. They’ve been amazing with things like ripped out claws, scratched eyes and anything that’s obviously an injury, but I brought my dog in once after he fell down the stairs and was walking weird and they sent me home with a $120+ bill and told me he seemed fine for a dog his age. A trip to his regular vet a week later revealed a slipped disc. That could be a result of their “no parents in the room” policy. You drop your pet off and wait for a call so I wasn’t able to be there to point out the concerns directly. Overall a great “walk in” vet for emergency injuries that can be seen with the naked eye.
