How to Save Money at VCA East Bay Veterinary Emergency

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We brought our beautiful Pug Ruby Cube to this facility. The care she received was absolutely amazing. I truly believe the reason our Ruby is home with us is because of the excellent care she received from VCA! Rick and I are beyond grateful for them! My pups will never go anywhere else for emergency care! We thought we were going to have to pay additional $ as she had been in the hospital for 2 days including an oxygen chamber…when we asked what more we owed….they said, nothing we are reimbursing you $450! Thank you again to all the amazing staff that gave our Ruby around the clock care!

I brought my 16 year old dog in for emergency gastrointestinal issue in March and cost me $600, she got better but then in June it flared up again and all I asked is that they give me another prescription so she would be better and they refused. I would have to pay another exam fee of $200 just to get $10 worth of medication!!! Keep in mind I had 2 pills left over for previous visit that helped her and they wouldn’t give me even a weeks worth that I was willing to pay for! They don’t care about an animal suffering just their pocket book! As you can tell I am very upset!

I wish i could give this place a 0. I noticed blood in my dogs pee and rushed her to the emergency. I was charged $1200 for blood work and urine test. When everything came out normal, I was asked to pay another $250 for x-rays to just to make sure there were no kidney stones. The doctor told me that the dog has a UTI. We were charged about $1500 and sent home with some antibiotics. The doctor informed me that she might have to change antibiotics after all her test results are in. Fast forward, I called the office to inquire about the test results/possibly switching the antibiotics since I was still noticing a small amount of blood. I was notified by the front desk that I will have to follow up with the regular vet and they don't do follow-up care. This is after I was told that the doctor will prescribe different antibiotics. Either the vet is inexperienced or the place is only money hungry. How is that it you charge $1500 to notify us that the dog has UTI and still not to able to treat it. The office obviously doesn't care about patient care and its all about the money. HIGHLY DISAPPOITNED!

Had to bring my 6 year old tabby for a possible urine blockage and sure enough, my vet was right! I hate to leave my kitty overnight, but the doctors knows best! I trust her will be in great care. From the moment we walked in, the receptionist was very kind, Dr was very informative and the vet tech who gave me pricings were all very kind and helpful. Thank you for taking OJ asap!

I will never take any of my animals to this vet ever again!!! There is this one lady that works there and she thought that she was above me and wouldn't work with me any way with the payment for the vet looking at my kitten. She told me that I wasn't gonna pay because I was expecting everything to be free. Ummmmm hell no. I know nothing in life comes free I was more than willing to pay but then she became a Karen and tried to raise her voice at me not expecting me to stand up for myself and as I stand up and tell her to change her tone she wouldn't so we started yelling at each other and I told her I wanted someone else to come in and speak to me because she wasn't being professional. I already contacted the manager and I will be getting in contact with their supervisor as well. This was not okay at all.😡
