How to Save Money at Pet Smiles General Veterinary Dentistry

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had such a great experience with Dr. Hansen at Pet Smiles General Veterinary Dentistry. She took incredible care of my dog, Theo. She was extremely thorough and took the time to explain everything - what to expect before, during, and after his procedure. She was also great about communicating throughout the entire process, which really put me at ease. It’s hard to find vets who are this detail-oriented and genuinely take the time to go over everything, including prevention and long-term care. Dr. Hansen clearly cares deeply about her patients and their people. The office staff is also wonderful - very friendly, professional, and accommodating. I’m so impressed with the level of care Theo received that I’ll be bringing my other dogs, Petunia and Louie, here too. Highly recommend Pet Smiles and Dr. Hansen! Picture attached because Theo is cute

My dog and I had an amazing experience at Pet Smiles!! They are so efficient, clean and safe! Dr. Hansen is knowledgeable and kind. Angela and the techs are so fantastic. Everyone took such great care of my fur baby!! She got her teeth cleaned and one tooth extracted. I already made an appt for my second dog to be seen. Highly recommend!!

I absolutely love Pet Smiles!! Dr. Hansen is amazing. Francesca had an issue with anesthesia when she was spayed and stopped breathing. The vet resuscitated her but I was so scared to put her under again. She needed three extractions because two of her puppy teeth would not fall out and another one partially broke. I went to three vets that were referred and they would not do it because of her previous incident with anesthesia. I was finally referred here and I’m so grateful that it was Dr. Hansen that did the procedure. It all worked out. She explained everything to me and what happened to her the first time. There were no complications when Francesca had her dental today and the kept me up to date with texts so I knew how she was doing. I will not go anywhere else for dental work. The price was much better than the other quotes I had received.

Superb experience always. Believe Dr. Hansen and Pet Smiles show true integrity. That is the highest compliment I can give to a healthcare professional. Integrity starts with doing a good job. No question the service is first rate, by a highly competent and conscientious veterinarian. Integrity continues with good communication, transparent and non avaricious billing and compassion. It certainly helps that Dr. Hansen and staff are personable and pleasant. One never feels they are on an assembly line. We are fortunate to have such a practice in the area. Thank you.

My sassy Dixie girl is a 12 year old Pomeranian who had some abscessed teeth that became severe while traveling. I needed to get in somewhere quickly so I called Pet Dental in Scottsdale where I had taken her before for cleanings but they were scheduled weeks out. This led me to find Pet Smiles where of course I was very nervous to try a new place in an emergency situation. They got me in literally the next day so I drove from Colorado to Arizona to make the appt. From beginning to end this place was amazing to say the least. All the girls are so friendly and Dr. Hansen is truly heaven sent. She over explains the entire process in ways that I understood. I made it known how scared I was to put Dixie under because she is older and so small. Dr. Hansen made me feel reassured and the rest of the team gave me detailed updates the entire day of the surgery. Everything went smoothly and now Dixie is better than ever. Things can get pricey but in my opinion nothing is more important than making sure my baby is healthy and in the best care. Thank you guys so much for everything 🩷🐾
