How to Save Money at Arizona Equine Medical & Surgical Centre

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Wow! Awesome work, to all the doctors, nurses, and techs that worked on Tucson, THANK YOU!!! Diagnosis was spot on and the treatment plan worked out well. Tucson is recovering well and is adapting to his new lifestyle. I appreciate the flexibility of providing a free consultation over the phone. Thank you all for showing Tucson so much support during his visit.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the outstanding care provided by our veterinarians. They have visited my horse, Maximus, on two occasions, and each time, their level of care has been exceptional. They approached each visit with kindness, patience, and a clear depth of knowledge, ensuring that Maximus was comfortable and they well-informed me about the anything that needed to done for my horse. The vets do not sugar coat things and that is best for what a horse owner needs to hear. They set up a plan for the new steps on treating my horse, and everything looks like it will work out, they did a lameness exam, X-rays, some injections on the hocks, nerve blockers to test where the pain was coming from. I will say the overall price for everything was fair since they were out with me for a few hours. They even did a complimentary sheath cleaning. It’s clear they’re motivated by their genuine love for animals rather than financial gain.

I want to say thank you to Dr. Kelsey. She came out today on a Sunday to do an emergent visit on my colicking horse. I have dealt with this before so I was expecting it to be a day of hard work and some medicine but his belly kept growing and growing and he looked so awful I've never had a horse colic this bad in my life. Dr. Kelsey came out was so kind compassionate and very thorough and to the point about what our options were, prices and profesional opinions about the situation. We unexpectedly had to put him down or else he would've likely passed in misery and pain any ways. It was so hard for me and my family but Dr. Kelsey gave me all the time I needed and didn't make me feel rushed or like I was just another number on her to do list. This is my childhood horse, and im so so appreciative and grateful she is so good at what she does and I will always remember this moment with peace, love and kindness ❤️

My horse needed a scope done due to chronic choking. It required an impromptu overnight stay due to some technical issues. Georgia didn’t seem to mind. In fact, she refused to load. How many people does it take to load Georgia? Quite a few. But the wonderful vets and techs at Arizona Equine got her in! They went above and beyond during her stay. Georgia said, “five stars. Didn’t like the tube down my nose. But would stay here again. Good amenities.” The scope was done quickly and everything was explained along the way. Was able to do it without sedation and they kept my horse calm through it. I will be switching to Arizona Equine for all of my horse needs going forward. I had used them back in 2021 when I had to help my first horse cross. They came so quickly on a Sunday morning. They were very patient and compassionate despite the fact it was a muddy rainy mess. Let me take a few more minutes to say goodbye and ensured his comfort through it all.

My mare had arthritis in her right front pastern joint. She would get short term relief with steroid injection followed by gel injections. She was partially bone on bone in the joint. I interviewed several surgeons before selecting Dr Howard at Az equine!! I could not be happier with my choice!! My mate had surgery today for arthrodesis of the pastern joint. His entire staff makes you feel welcome and explain procedures prior to and after the surgery. Dr Howard spent time answering my email questions as well As meeting with me at my request prior to the surgery. Today was a big day but they were very professional and my mare did great!! I myself work in surgery so I was able to watch through a large window they treated my mare with kid gloves!!! They have great sterile technique and Dr Howard came out when she was in recovery room to tell me he was pleased with how it went. She is in a fiberglass cast and he showed me the X-rays of the screw placement!!! I had been told to euthanize her but she has no other issues so I eould not even consider that! I can’t say enough great things about this place and my experience with DLL of the staff!! It’s clean and they take great care of your horse!! Highly recommend Dr Howard and AZ Equine! A very very happy horse owner Ann
