How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This location is by far the best! The staff Dr Meng Jeff, Autum and everyone are so caring and very compassionate when it comes to our pets. They helped me with the passing of my baby recently and totally understand my pain. I thank them all for taking good care of my baby Gio these past 11 years. Thank you team and I will forever be thankful for all the kindness and care you all gave to Gio

*Edit to add- it's been over 2 weeks since reaching out per the directions below with no response. It appears this auto reply message is just an tool to look like the customer service team is engaging customers.* I typically have a good experience at this location, so they get a second star but this experience made me lose trust in this team. My dog is a long standing patient and medically complex. She was given a new medication and had a severe reaction resulting in an expensive emergency vet visit. We did not receive any written guidance about the new medication and what to look for if she reacted poorly. The next day Kim called to inform us that we were definitely told about the chance of allergic reaction, although my husband states the the nurse interacted with him very little and he wasn't told about this type of severe side effect. Kim was also combative with me when I informed her the name of the medication was omitted from my view of the medical visit summary, so I had to hunt for what she was given to tell the ER vet. She told me I should just call to get the records, but this emergency happened after hours and I could not have done that. I strongly recommend banfield select another associate to do these type of "smooth over" calls for people who have had a poor experience, I was prepared to let it go but the eagerness to absolve themselves of any blame is salt in the wound and I will go to another location to get care I can trust. A little apologizing and compassion goes a long way for people who have been banfield customers for almost 8 years.

Dr. Kirk and her staff were all very unprofessional and rude. We have been to other Banfield locations and have had great experiences. This time we felt that no one wanted to truly help us. As soon as we get to our room for our dog to be seen the vet assistant rushing us and didn’t even introduce herself. Our dog is usually very friendly towards everybody but gave a small growl at this woman. It seemed that this woman didn’t even like animals based off of her attitude. Very rude and very unprofessional.

It seemed like every aspect of the visit was an opportunity to upcharge me for everything. Even at the end I was suggested a food for uti issues. I said sure if you have samples. No, $8 per small can. $3 at Petsmart. $850 total for the visit, if I wanted more answers extras would have put it over $1,000.

Took my cat there , she was severely ill ....she stayed there for 4 hours and they did absolutely nothing to help her. These people are suppose to be trained professionals. They said my cat would not let them touch her. They told me it was her teeth when I just got her teeth cleaned 6 months ago with no issues. After I brought her home by the grace of God she was feeling better with still no clue to why she was so sick. I will no longer be taking her there and looking into other health insurance for my fur baby. This was a wake up call for me.
