How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog was seen yesterday and today. The staff and the dog was aware of what his issues were and how he was declining all day even after all the money I spent to try to get him better. Find so be it I wanted to try whatever I could for him. My issue is all day I kept the doctor and staff informed that the euthanasia call could be today if not early tomorrow morning. But mostly possibly today. So at 5:00 pm I made the call due to his health was declining just to be told the doctor is leaving early today. She is with an emergency appt now. You should have called earlier. Keep in mind I told them I was in route to Banfield. But since I was told no I headed home and made the appt for the earliest they would give in. But once I got home my dog started having what seemed like a seizure or heart attack. He was convulsing shaking couldn’t control any of his movements of his bowels. He was scared my husband , my kids, and I were scared. It was the most horrific thing we had ever seen in our lives and didn’t know what to do. I tried to call Banfield as this was happening and the receptionist was no help. My family and I were in a panic because my poor baby body was uncontrollably thrashing around shaking. I ca not believing they made my family and I go through that when they were kept up to date all day about how he was doing. Not only that but when I called the cancellation office to cancel his plan since he is dead they want to still charge me for the full plan!!!

The Chesapeake team at Banfield has been nothing short of amazing! I truly appreciate the care and expertise this team brings. Bailey is always so kind and caring, and I know my pup Ace is in great hands whenever he visits with Dr. Lebron. Thank you all for treating him like family!

I was going to banfeild pembrook and looking back it felt lile the fast food of pet care. We are so used to crappy health care in the usa i didnt really question it. Let me tell you how much i love banfeild Chesapeake. Check in takes longer. At first i was annoyed…im like arent i just dropping my dog off…then i realized they were actually asking questions and cared about the answers. The vet ALWAYS calls when we have a question and she takes the time to answer questions. The clinic closes at 6 but i will get a call at 6:45 sometimes as she makes sure to get back to everyone. Guster is finally getting the care he deserves. I wont go anywhere else. I cant say enough about how good i feel about guster’s care here!

Very frustrating. Absolutely no concern for my sick dog when I called today. Pushing test and cost before I even get therewith my sick dog. We’ve been paying for the annual program for over 10 years for two dogs. Today one dog is sick and the lack of empathy is ridiculous. After today we will definitely look for options.

They charged us for medicine and forgot to give it to us. They called saying we could get it in a voicemail THEN tried to gaslight us that they didn’t know that we never got the medicine. About to cancel my subscription for both my dogs here. Additionally, we paid for nail clipping but I got the dog back and could not tell they were ever clipped. The nails still had dirt on them which wouldn’t be there if the nails were cut. Beware of this location.
