How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had originally been with Banfield since I found my calico cat as a kitten. My family used them for my family dog when I was growing up. However, due to some recent level of care, I feel that Banfield is not appropriately equipped to handle what needed/needs to be done. 1. I had to take my cat to an emergency vet who diagnosed her with FIC and an inflamed bladder. They instructed me to follow up with my vet to confirm after treatment that the bladder is no longer inflamed. In doing so the technician said that they wouldn't be able to see the bladder with ultrasound as the machine couldn't do that, and that the only other way was pulling a sample for a UTI test. A sample was pulled and they said "Yes she has a UTI, we need to now do a culture test to determine which bacteria before giving her antibiotics". I paid the $300. They called and said "Oh actually the culture test came back negative, so it must have been a contaminated sample". Its concerning that this happened and makes me question the level of cross contamination that is happening. 2. I don't believe that I have ever actually met the vet in person. Every time that I brought her in for an appointment, I did the intake with the technician and they took her back and it was always a phone call. The phone calls never felt connected, it felt rushed and as a first time pet owner I am still always learning and look to the experts for clarification and help. 3. In PetSmart, they sell prescription food. Banfield just gave me the card and said "You'll have to go to check out in order to get the food". Little did I know (or see) the prescription food was out in the open on the opposite wall. I think a level of care the technicians should do is walk the owner over and show them "This is the food you'll need to purchase, show the cashier the prescription card, and you can purchase it". Because in short I didn't buy the one that was also urine and stress, just urine. Sure that's partially on me, but as an owner who needs answers and is confused with the events happening, a little bit can still go a long way. All in all, I no longer recommend Banfield. Especially DO NOT DO the care plans. All it does is say "Hey owner don't pay the services now, one monthly payment over time will pay it all back". As the agent I spoke with over the phone said "You're basically taking out a Line of Credit with this". Again sure that can be on me but it was sold more so that it's discounted services because you have the plan.

Revised: Im giving them 5 stars because they really care about your experience. So if you have a bad experience Id encourage you to send them and email and they will try to make it right. Also, Dr. Williams is amazing 👏

I took my cat here for several years. The communication was always very unclear and they didn’t seem very equipped to treat cats. For example, a tech told me that my cat was difficult and she might need anesthesia for expressing anal glands in the future. When my cat was sick, a vet made vaguely threatening comments about her wellbeing if we didn’t get further treatment while also telling us that it was impossible to know what was wrong or if the treatment would work. We recently switched to a new vet and the difference is jarring. The techs have said every time we’ve come in that my cat (the same one) handles procedures like anal glad expression very well (while fully awake). Our new vet also told me that my cat had a very serious result from bloodwork taken at Banfield, but our vet at Banfield never even mentioned it to us. Because we were not made aware, we are having to deal with the fallout from this result a year later.

We have used Banfield Pet Hospital now for at least 20 years now! They have always treated us as though we were their only patient, when I call to schedule an appointment they get us right in there and if your pet has a serious illness beyond their scope of study, or if it's something that they aren't set up to handle they take it upon themselves to call around and find another pet hospital that is set up to handle your pet and they go ahead and forward all of your pets medical history and make certain that they are fully aware of the current issue is and they do a hospital to hospital pre-admission so that all you have to do is take your pet there where you are greeted by a group of people who are not only "acting in full on readiness" but who also, know literally EVERYTHING that you know and oftentimes they may even know more information than you as the parent may not know. I have found that Banfield has always treated both the parents and the pets with full on tenderness, friendliest, care and concern the list goes on and on. I simply cannot say enough great things about this particular Banfield establishment or about their employees. Every now and then you may find an employee who seems somewhat lost, unsure and not quite as full of knowledge as you are use to ...only to find out that they are a new employee. Another indication of it being a wonderful place is that they keep the same employees for long periods of time or until that particular employee finishes with school and move on to advance further in their personal chosen field which most often is in the veterinarian field. My son (dog), Lucas absolutely loves going there and he knows and absolutely loves and adores all the employees there and they always remember him. This particular Banfield Pet Hospital is always neat, clean and tidy and smells fresh and of some type of disinfectant. I would be very quick to refer anyone to this Banfield location. They staff a couple different doctors there and at least one doctor is always there and their doctors are always on call. I have had to call them before after hours and left a message for a return call from a doctor and from the time I left the message until the doctor called me back was exactly 7 minutes! Their level of love, care & concern for my dog, Lucas has been what I feel to be above and beyond what is necessary and I find that to be refreshing and relieving. If you've ever had a truly sick pet you know how unnerving this can be...they can always sense this and they have even taken the time to inquire on how I'm holding up and offer up some verbal support without sugar coating just how serious your pet's illness can be. If your pet is in need of a great Veterinarian clinic, I would very highly recommend this particular Banfield location, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. So why not try stopping in and sign your pet up to their wellness plan. This plan gives you discounts on certain treatments that will help you to save money 💰! They see pets for simple things such as their shot maintenance on up. Should you happen to lose your pet, they even will have your pet cremated should that be your choice! I hope you call and make your pets appointment today and I truly hope that you and your pet are as sincerely pleased with this location, the doctor's and the staff as Lucas and I have always been! Best Wishes for both you and your pets! Genuinely and Sincerely, Cheryl Smeltser
