How to Save Money at LocalVet Urgent Care - Houston

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

First and foremost, I want to give a big thanks to Dr. Hodges for taking my Husky's case and being up to the challenge in regard to her care. This place is literally one of the best Vets I've been to since my Husky got injured. The staff are super friendly, polite and very personable. The care that has been provided for my Husky has been nothing short of outstanding, Dr. Hodges has been straight forward and transparent from the get go which I am very appreciative of. I highly recommend the LocalVet Urgent Care, your pets will be in great hands no doubt. (Just to clarify on the picture, my Husky is doing very well! She was being dramatic and refused to walk all the way into the house after coming from LocalVet, she walked a few steps out of the truck, slowly laid down and just wanted to be picked up like a baby and carried inside).

As a veterinarian myself, I have immense peace of mind knowing Dr. Hodges and his team are in the neighborhood helping pets with high-quality care, affordable and fair prices, and a deep love of animals. This is a solid team that I wouldn't hesitate to take my own pets to. They practice medicine in a way that bridges genuine care for patients and excellent communication with families, even around tough topics. And they do it with personality! I love that Dr. Hodges helps to brighten people's days and sends patients home with bow ties!

Dr. William Hodges and his staff are caring, focused, and professional. William took the time to review the diagnosis and treatment options, discussing pros and cons for each. He then personally called 3 days later to check up on our dog's progress. First rate. Highly recommended.

I took my new puppy here and found out he had Parvo. I didn't know a lot about it but the vet and staff were really good and not pushy at all on the care treatment plan. I feel that they gave the right level of care needed and were very open an honest in some of the treatment options that were very expensive. I also feel that the price was below average, I used google and chatgpt to compare prices to see and the cost of what I paid for the treatments seems to have been more than fair. Last thing I would say is that the hours of operation were amazing I was seen on a weekday in the late evening around 830pm. I would for sure go back if needed for emergency care of any of my pets. My puppy is happy and healthy.

Amazing, caring people who work here. Everyone from the vet to the techs were wonderful through a very difficult situation. Took care of our dog Mia and were very patient explaining everything and taking good care of her. They are very understanding and try there best to offer affordable care. As dog owners of 8 it is good having someone close to home to help with our needs. We are grateful this place is open.
