How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Please be aware of this so called animal hospital I took my cat in today to have him checked and after a bunch of blood work and a radiologist abdomen package I was told that he had a blockage in one of his kidneys.. ask them how to treat it and told me to take him to another hospital since they don’t know what there doing .. I also ask them if they could give him some medicine for the pain after having him for 10 straight hours and they said it wasn’t appropriate to give him any but it was a good idea to give him a rabies shot? Long story short charge me over 700 dollars didn’t do anything to help and when I ask for medical records so i could take him to a real hospital they said they weren’t ready whatever that means..If you really care about you’re pet do not spend you’re time or money here or you will be very disappointed..

Great staff the ladies there explained everything. Made sure that we understood all instructions perfectly. Never rushed the appointment. Made sure we all knew what was wrong with my cat . Then came up with a plan . I am so greatful for their kindness . This was a great experience. And I will go back because of how great the staff was. .

I had been a proud patron of this vet hospital for 11 years. I recently took my pet to their annual comprehensive exam and was told my senior pet was healthy- no issues, nothing was expressed to BOTH of the times I spoke to a vet tech before and while picking up my pet. I had a scheduled dental cleaning for my pet 4 days later & dropped off my pet as I always do for their dental cleaning. I received a call three hours later stating that to my extreme surprise, that because my pet has a heart murmur they couldn’t proceed. This is unacceptable & negligent behavior for them not to communicate a health concern for my pet, especially since for their dental cleaning having heart murmur is extremely dangerous, thus why they couldn’t proceed. When I asked why wasn’t I notified this when I picked up my pet literally four days earlier from their appointment, I couldn’t get an answer. All I got was “maybe the vet attending your pet was busy in surgery and couldn’t go and tell you.” That’s such a cop- out answer and really unbelievable as the vet techs are usually the ones that communicate with the pet parents there, unless it’s a more serious issue. I am appalled & extremely disappointed with their negligent behavior by failing to communicate to my pets health status, on BOTH of the opportunities they had, and yet still calling to confirm with me their cleaning after the discovery of a heart murmur that according to the vet overseeing the cleaning, was in the medical portal of my pet, which again, why wasn’t I notified of it? I didn’t receive any information or paperwork about the action plan for this health issue. This could’ve resulted in something far worse. I wasn’t given any clarity on why I wasn’t informed about the heart murmur of my 12 year old senior pet, nor did I feel like they cared that I was upset that they failed to communicate with me such vital information. I have been a patron for this place for 11 years, and it was sad to see the nonchalant & dismissive attitude about this very upsetting situation for me & my pet, and their lack of communication & initiative to provide me with an answer of why I wasn’t informed of the heart murmur. I will no longer be taking my pets here.

I have tried… In numerous occasions to give this place a chance to get it together. The office systems are either broken or whoever took over is changing everything. There are constant issues with scheduling, not communicating fully with the dogs owner about expectations, and the joke of customer service who feels so bad for you but can’t ever do anything. Three different appointments have been cancelled because of an issues they created. I asked to speak to anyone who could help and apparently no one in store can. No one ever came out. Any time. This is THE WORST BANDFIELD location. Go to the stand alone on the other side of Mesquite. Much better service. Since I can’t get y’all to stop contacting me. I’ll leave it here. REMOVE ME FROM YOUR CALL LIST, BANDFIELD PET HOSPITAL INSIDE OF PETSMART IN MESQUITE.
