How to Save Money at West County Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

If I could give a half of a star I would. We have been going to West County Animal Clinic for years and after our most recent experience we are switching vets. In September our 11.5 year old lab mix got a bladder infection. We took her to the vet once with a urine sample we brought in. She was put on medicine and we were sent home. A couple of days later she is not getting better and we end up taking her to VSS to get something to sedate her until we could get back to West County Animal Clinic. We took her back the next day (Wednesday 9/18) and she spent the day there and we were told it was a bladder infection and were given a stronger medication. Thursday after work she is doing terrible. Doesn't seem with it, couldn't get her to eat, doing our best to keep her comfortable but knowing that this was probably the end. Friday morning (9/20) we called the vet first thing to say we needed to put her down and were told to bring her in at 10:00. At 9:30 we receive a call from the vet's office saying that the vet does not think it's time for us to put our dog down. We show up at 10:00 anyway because if they can't do it we will go to VSS to have it done. After having a guilt trip pretty heavily laid on us (as if we are not upset enough having to make this decision and did not make it lightly) they put her down. I asked that we have a paw print made so I have something of her to keep. Fast forward to today when my husband called to see if it was ready (since they never called us to say if it was) he goes to pick it up and it is cracked into multiple pieces. Pretty much $1000 and a week later I have lost my dog and the last thing I would have of her is broken..... Just like my heart.

I won't bring my animals anywhere else. Dr. Steinberg and Dr. Bender are so compassionate and intelligent and just good people. The entire staff is also very kind and willing to explain whatever you need explaining. Can't say enough good things about them. My dog has epilepsy and they've been so good to him and have kept him as healthy as he can be.

I moved to West County 3.5 years ago and needed a vet for my two German Shepherds. We were lucky enough to find West County Animal Clinic. The Veterinarians here are top notch. I want to point out my interactions with Dr. Dolan. She is a compassionate and patient vet that clearly cares about the animals she treats. I appreciate her willingness to answer questions and follow up after visits I've had. I've gone to many different vets over the last 10 years and West County Animal Clinic definitely stands out! I highly recommend them.

For over twenty-years my cats and dogs have received the best care at the clinic. I feel like the doctors, and all safe are compassionate, knowledgeable, and completely focuses on our pets during clinic visits. Dr. Bender has treated our five cats and three dogs. I would not take my precious pets anywhere else.
