How to Save Money at Sandy Paws Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I just needed to share my experience this week . I had to say goodbye to my 13 year old Shih Tzu Brody this week . The entire Sandy Paws staff handled it all so sympathetically and compassionately. I even received a sympathy card from the staff yesterday. They are the best . I highly recommend them . If I ever get another dog I definitely will go back to them .

We've had such a positive experience with the entire team at Sandy Paws Vet since establishing care in 2024. My dog recently had surgery, but also had some health concerns just prior, and Dr. Kim and her staff were incredibly knowledgable, kind, compassionate, and genuinely invested in her care. What stood out the most was how supported we felt throughout the process. Receiving the initial diagnosis followed by the surgery & recovery has been overwhelming, but the entire Sandy Paws team never made me feel like I was alone. They were patient, reassuring, and always willing to help. I cannot stress this enough. A special thank you to Jenn, who has gone above and beyond to check in on my fur baby. The care and attention we have received is top tier, and I am so grateful we found such a trustworthy veterinary team.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Exceptional Care After a Frightening Alligator Attack! I can’t thank Dr. Kim and her amazing team enough for the incredible care they gave my dog, Drake, after he was attacked by an eight-foot alligator right in our own yard. The attack happened so fast that I didn’t realize he’d actually been bitten until a couple of days later. When I brought him in for his routine vaccination & lab work, I told Dr. Kim about what had happened and thank goodness I did. During her exam, she found a deep puncture wound under his armpit that had already begun to close on the surface. It turned out to be three inches deep, she acted immediately. Drake was put under anesthesia so she could clean and repair the damage and place a drain to help it heal from the inside out. She explained everything clearly and made sure Drake was comfortable every step of the way. The entire staff treated Drake like he was one of their own like they always do. Their compassion, skill, and attention to detail quite literally saved him from a dangerous infection and possibly worse. He’s now healing beautifully and I can see he is better by the day. It’s rare to find a veterinarian who combines such medical expertise with such genuine kindness. Dr. Kim is truly one of a kind, and we’re forever grateful for the care she gave to Drake after such a terrifying ordeal. Thank you, Dr. Kim, for going above and beyond. You’re our hero! 🐾❤️

I had a really positive experience today at Sandy Paws in Estero. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. My dog, Suzy is an older dog and our previous Vets office had closed. SPVH was awesome with the onboarding process; I know I made the right choice. The shopping center had good parking and lots of other things to do too. The office itself was clean and welcoming. Snacks and refreshments for both pets and their humans.
