How to Save Money at VCA DeLand Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our senior dog, a cancer survivor, awoke this morning in great pain and distress. It was obvious that she was not going to survive the day, and so we called our regular vet (who had performed her original cancer surgery) -and they could not squeeze her in. Our 13-year-old dog was in great pain, couldn't stand up, and had lost complete control of her bladder and bowels -- she had really declined quickly and unexpectedly overnight! Her breathing was labored. At the suggestion of my neighbor I called this location, and surprisingly they had us on file from a few years ago because they had bought one of the old practices in DeLand where we used to go with our dog. The Dr here graciously agreed to see our dog immediately even though they already had a packed schedule. We were greeted with a wheeled gurney and they were able to get the dog out of the car and into the office for us. They were compassionate and understanding, and they even had a special room to take care of pets crossing the rainbow bridge. All options were explained clearly with no pressure. We were able to be with Barbie as she was gently euthanized, and there was even a special door where grieving pet parents like us could exit discreetly without walking out crying with grief in front of everyone in the waiting room. We are so grateful this practice was there for us and Barbie. And the price was extremely reasonable given the circumstances!!! Thank you for easing the pain of our dog and not letting her needlessly suffer! Every staff member was professional, kind and courteous.

I bring my 14 Y.O. Chihuahua with heart issues and my 10 Y.O. Chuweenie to the VCA. I and my little fur babies are so happy here! The staff and their vet are so sweet to their and my needs. My girl always gets so nervous but they are always so gentle and kind with her that she eases right up with them, and that's saying a LOT because she hates EVERYONE, she is a 9 lb. demon Chihuahua after all lol My Louie, the Chuweenie has only had to be seen once for an emergency and they were absolutely amazing! So far so good with his strange non-seizure episode and he's been eating great! Each and every one of the staff have a kind, cheery, witty and understanding nature about them when needed. Thank you all for being the kind of place where I and my fur babies can feel comfortable,at home and welcomed with open arms.

Dr. A was super sweet and knowledgeable. Went in with my 9-year-old Newfoundland. She had a yeast infection, and they took such great care with her to help her stand up when she decided she had stood long enough and laid down. Love this clinic and it's staff!

I love this place & all the workers, but my favorite of course is Dr Brown. If he is not working then I don't take my 2 great danes Chloe a rescue & Hercules my Service Dog, also our sons dog old man Haas for check ups. I'm sure there all good he just does large animals for where my love it and he is definitely the best. Thank you office Manager and Staff for always treating us like family that's huge when it comes to your fur babies especially when one is a Certified Service Dog. Yall are the best!

I brought my Norwegian Forest Cat, Abby, here after not being able to get her an appointment at the Vet where she was an ESTABLISHED cat patient until almost 2 weeks later! I explained it was an emergency basis and CS would not take her like I said until almost 2 weeks later. I called VCA Deland and they said I could bring her in the next day! I was very relieved! Unfortunately, my kitty cat was very, very sick (hence, the emergency) and the two vet techs I dealt with, Erin and Henry were absolutely wonderful! Erin made all the arrangements for my Abby to go to Blue Pearl. I didn't have to do a thing but show up with my kitty cat. BTW, Blue Pearl was awesome as well. Both places took the time, the patience, the caring demeanor to explain what was going on with my kitty (13 years old). And, knowing I was just keeping her comfortable for her remaining time, I called VCA to find out what I could do after she passed. They were there for me to deal with this very excruciating heartbroken time! Dr. Friedman was great, but I can't say enough about Erin and Henry! They were there for me and let me cry, cry, cry. They knew Abby was so important to me and I appreciate them taking the time to understand my pain and grief. I so appreciate both your kindness and caring nature! Don't ever lose this wonderful trait that is so needed and welcomed in a pet owner's worst hours. Thank you!
