How to Save Money at St. Charles Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Took my one year-old Yorkie puppy to Saint Charles animal Hospital because she had it in some of her bedding and was in eating or drinking. She spent the night at this hospital and everybody the vets and the techs treated her very well. She was put on IV therapy and seemed to bounce back a little bit I picked her up after 24 hours and she is now home eating and drinking and getting better by the hour. This hospital is phenomenal. I didn’t have all the funds to pay, but I had to do it for my puppy and I don’t regret it because they took very good care of her. I just wish they would have accepted her insurance so that I didn’t have to pay out-of-pocket

Dr.Porter and Trevor looked after my old girl, and they didn't give up on her when we were all thinking she was at the end. Dr. Porter threw out some last ditch, unconventional ideas, and now my old cat has improved so much, that I'm no longer thinking about euthanasia. Brittany is also an example of the people they have there, and she was so compassionate and comforting when she answered my sobbing phone call when I was considering euthanasia. I like this vet as it is also a hospital, and is always open, 24/7. It is a little more expensive, but if your pet needs serious care, they can do that here. They also see pocket pets. That's rare around here. Overall, I have been very pleased with the care my pets have received and the staff here.

I live in Sanford and St Charles was the closest emergency vet with reptile specialists to me, at over an hour away. I brought in my gecko Evi who needed sperm plugs removed asap. The team here worked diligently and so gently with him, they are also very informative And keep you updated on your pet. This place has a great and welcoming atmosphere; I was there for a little over 5 hours because some more dire emergencies did occur. My heart and prayers goes out to two families last night who lost their pups. Evi is healing well so far, already more active just a day later. He was sent home with oral and syringe medication and they explained the process so detailedly and walked me through it so I can help him heal up in the best way possible. I am very appreciative of St. Charles and granted any more emergencies do occur, I will be driving over an hour to get here.

Had to let my baby boy Jack go this morning and couldn’t have asked for a more caring and compassionate staff. I was able to hold him as he past and spend as much time after as I needed. I would HIGHLY recommend both the animal hospital AND the veterinary clinic for regular check ups. I can tell that the Dr.’s there truly care about not only their pets but mine as well.💔😢❤️ This was my third experience with them the first being another emergency with Jacks leg and the second was just a few days before today to establish Jack as a patient. I will be bringing my other pup Thanos to the veterinary clinic for all future visits.

Took my chicken on a Sunday with severe swelling and the vet gave her a 50/50 chance of survival. I wanted to take the chance to try and cure her and was given antibiotics and anti inflammatory medication for her. It took a couple of weeks for the swelling to subside and my chicken is now back to normal! Very happy with the outcome and service we received!
