How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The professionalism of Gabby, Mary, Dr Hwang, and the entire team is to be applauded. They made my visit so much less stressful by letting me know exactly what was to be done to my 7 lbs Yorkie, Marley! The checkout was flawless even after I made a wrong choice for payment and had it resolved. I was made comfortable with the after care that I would be providing to my dog with antibiotics and pain control medication regiment providing adequate amount of dispensers and explaining the different dosages storage and when to give. When I called to report that one of the medication was not going well they provided a very supportive response and involved the doctor to provide alternative solutions. Great place to take your pet for her medical care! Kudos to Banfield Almaden Expressway, San Jose!

I brought my dog to Banfield Hospital after he chipped part of his tooth and started bleeding while chewing on a bully stick. I was understandably worried and scheduled an appointment for 11 a.m. Before the visit, I received a call around 10 a.m. letting me know that there were no in-person appointments available and that the only option was a drop-off, which I agreed to. When I dropped him off at 11 a.m., the receptionist told me it would be about 30 minutes before he could receive care. However, I didn’t hear anything for several hours and finally received a call around 2:30 p.m. saying the check was done — more than three hours after the original appointment time. During that call, I was told the doctor recommended a tooth extraction, but no additional details were provided about the injury or other possible treatment options. When we arrived to pick him up around 3:30 p.m., the staff mainly talked about signing up for Banfield’s wellness program and paying in advance for the extraction, which felt quite pushy given that we hadn’t even spoken with the doctor yet. We had to specifically ask to meet the doctor, who then repeated what the receptionist had already told us — that my dog needed a tooth extraction and that she wasn’t knowledgeable about repair options. When we mentioned that we’d like to try everything possible to save his tooth and asked if a root canal might be an option, she said yes, it could be done at a dental clinic, but added, “They’re just dogs — I’ve seen dogs live pretty happily without the two teeth.” That comment felt dismissive and made me feel like our concerns weren’t being taken seriously. We paid at checkout, but overall, the advice we received was no more helpful than what we could have found online. I understand that not every vet handles dental procedures, but I wish there had been better communication, clearer guidance, and more empathy during such a stressful situation. I’m grateful my dog is okay for now, but I left feeling disappointed and unsure if I would trust Banfield with his care in the future.

Today (07/25/2025) I took my little dog to PetSmart Almaden; my pet is 1 year and 4 months old. First, I had to wait; my appointment was at 2:30 pm, and they saw my pets at 3:15 pm. The nurse called Cher, and the veterinarian, Dr. Salzman, gave a very bad performance. From the first moment, the nurse, instead of carrying Maya, pulled her. Maya was very stressed; she had been afraid since I adopted her. The nurse said that my little Chihuahua wanted to bite her, which is not true. Maya is a Chiweenie; she does not bite. She took her, and when she brought her back, Maya was dirty. She popped inside, and nobody cleaned her. I immediately carried her, and I noticed she was dirty. I took my dogs to the Almaden Pet Hospital because it was convenient, however, that hospital is not good. The women at the front desk never smile, they are in a bad mood all the time, and the nurse today was rude. On the other hand, the veterinarian, the first time I met him, did not care about what I felt, as he gave me Maya back so dirty. But the most preoccupying was that I received a prescription for my pet, with a note, “Maya will need to take TRAZODONE in the future so her stress and fear-anxiety will be low”, and the nurse told me they will not see Maya if she does not have the prescription. The vet and nurse are so incompetent, their only option to see a puppy is to drug it. Another issue I had last time I tried to get an appointment for Maya because at the front desk, people told me they could not schedule an appointment because Maya was dead, and they could not schedule an appointment for a dead dog. As a result, I went to the Coleman hospital, and they found Maya without any problem. “Trazodone is a prescription medication primarily used in humans to treat depression and anxiety. In veterinary medicine, it's used off-label, meaning it's not specifically FDA-approved for animals, but veterinarians commonly prescribe it to manage anxiety-related conditions in dogs. According to the National Institute of Health: Adverse effects of trazodone in dogs on primary hemostasis and electrocardiogram: A single‐blinded placebo‐controlled crossover study.

I’ve been bringing my three dachshunds to this Banfield location for several years, and they’ve truly been there through it all—the good, the bad, and the stressful moments. Scheduling has always been smooth, and they’re quick to accommodate larger procedures when needed. In emergency situations, they’ve never hesitated to take us in promptly, which means a lot. There’s usually enough staff to keep things moving efficiently, and wait times are minimal unless there’s a rush of pickups or drop-offs. The team is professional, caring, and consistent. Highly recommend this location if you’re looking for a dependable Banfield with a solid, responsive crew.
