How to Save Money at Alum Rock Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

You can really tell a wonderful team by just a short visit to the local vet. Thank you for for supporting the local community with your kindness ARAH. My pet turtle had an eye infection and his eye was glued shut due to my poor management of his water quality. He was given an antibiotic shot and some eye drops and now he is back to his normal turtle self. Our family is grateful to have you Alum Rock Animal Hospital team. This is why you choose your local animal hospitals for all your pet needs.

The best in the area! Their pricing is fair, the veterinarian is excellent, and they've never tried to talk me into unnecessary testing/procedures/medications. About 1 year ago, I brought one of my cats here after he received woefully inadequate care from our former veterinarian. Sadly, by the time we arrived at Alum Rock, it was too late to save him. However, they made his last few days comfortable; and I'm 100% sure that he would still be alive today if we had found this place sooner. Since then, they have helped my other two cats through chronic issues, routine testing, and dental surgery. So, as long as I'm in the Bay Area, I will *never* take my pets to another veterinarian. Thank you to everyone at Alum Rock Animal Hospital, we appreciate each of you so much!

Cat was lethargic and vomiting everywhere. We went here, they palpated his stomach and said it was fine. Ran blood tests but did not respond to our calls asking for followup on the blood test the next day, even though they said they’d be done by then. We still don’t have those tests and it’s day 4. I wish they had pushed to get him an ultrasound, because we could have caught the obstruction in his intestines so much earlier. Now, the obstruction has been in for 5 days and we have to surgically remove a part of his intestines at a different clinic. I think they really fumbled the ball on care for our cat.

I took our German Shepherd mix to the Alum Rock Animal Hospital for her annual check-up and to update her vaccinations. They were great! I was able to get an appointment the day after calling, there was a short wait once we arrived, and everything was explained clearly and succinctly. I had not brought a specific document with me, so I was able to email it to them when I got home and then sent me the revised documents I needed within minutes. I was super-impressed with the professionalism and kindness of both staff members with whom I had contact. We definitely recommend them!

I have been coming to this Vet for a while now. But after today I am pretty sure I will not be coming back. The vet was a condescending person who believe he is better than the people he is talking to. Almost every question we asked he would just say it should be fine or just don't worry about it. He told us "well you do not have basic knowledge then" when we ask a question we were worried about for our dog. He also say "this should be common sense" if it was common sense why would we spend 400+ dollars to come to the vet. You come to the vet because you don't have the information to help your pet but for him to belittle you because of it is horrible. The only positive thing about the visit was the vet techs Nez and Stephanie. They were amazing.
