How to Save Money at Animal Medical Center | San Jose

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I was looking for a place to have our kitten neutered, but vet prices are very high right now. Someone recommended Animal Medical Center and they were great! $150 less than our regular vet and they didn't tack on exam and office fees. They work with rescue groups, so they know how great the need for neutering services is. I was able to get an appointment on a Saturday, which was great. The staff and vets are friendly and caring. They did a wonderful job on our Buster and he was fully recovered from the procedure by late afternoon. Kind of a long way for us to make them our regular vet, but if you live near Bascom and Camden in South San Jose and you have pets, they are a great choice!

Never ever ever go here. The doctor doesn't care about your animal. Doesn't. Care. I took my boy here and he had to be muzzled but that shouldn't matter. It shouldn't matter if your dog has a muzzle or not, they should all be able to obtain the same treatment. The doctor seemed very "over it" when examining my dog, sighing, rubbing his eyes, chuckling when I answered a question in a way he didn't like in a "this is unbelievable" kind of way. He made me feel terrible about how hard I was making his job because my dog was muzzled then drew up a $2200 bill. He is a veterinarian, a medical professional, not every animal is going to be friendly and this cannot have been the first one in his career he had to examine one. The front desk staff and techs are friendly, the vet though does not care, he just wants your money so he can keep his Mercedes.

I had a recent scare with my cat and decided to take him in to see Dr. Grewal at Animal Medical center, and I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience. Dr. Grewal is an exceptional veterinarian who truly cares about his patients and their well-being. He is incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and compassionate, and always takes the time to explain everything in detail so that you can make informed decisions about your pet's care. Not only is Dr. Grewal an excellent doctor, but he also clearly loves what he does, and it shows in the way he interacts with his patients and their owners. Overall, I would highly recommend Dr. Grewal and Animal Medical Center to anyone looking for top-notch veterinary care. The entire staff is friendly, professional, and genuinely cares about the animals they treat. Thank you, Dr. Grewal, for all that you do!

Friendly and very helpful on the phone. Super friendly and nice staff. Jae the tech is AMAZING! My husky didn't want to leave. All the staff is up front and honest with pricing, diagnostics, etc. Very relaxed atmosphere which put everyone living thing at ease. I did not see any family members scared, or trying to leave. Everyone seemed happy to be at the vet on an early Saturday morning.

To their credit all the techs and assistants were very nice. I took my cat in for what I thought was a constipation issue. The doctor was extremely rough with him. I wanted to tell him to please be more gentle with my pet. I could tell that my cat was terrified. He wanted to do well over $1000 worth of work that would be completely unnecessary, that or which I of course declined. When I was waiting for the vet tech to return I heard that doctor just screaming at the top of his lungs at that poor tech! In what universe does he think that would be acceptable? This made me and my mom extremely uncomfortable. I will never take my cat back to them and I won’t recommend them to anyone.
