How to Save Money at Stave Lake Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Last week I had to make the hardest decision, to allow my sweet senior pitbull cross over the rainbow Bridge due to old age and more importantly failing health. The staff at Stave Lake Vet were incredibly supportive and understanding. They took ink prints of Lucy's nose and Paws for me and gave me a beautiful card that the whole staff signed and wrote words of kindness and support. I want to especially say thank you to Dr. Christine Smetschka. She was incredibly helpful, and informative, she provided me with options and always wanted what was the best outcome for both Lucy and myself. Whenever I had questions she did her best to answer them and if she didn't have the answer she found resources that would guide me in my research. She understood how hard this end of life journey was and was always supportive, kind, patient, and non-judgmental. I will take my time to grieve and most likely won't get another dog/pet for a few years, but once I adopt a pet into my home again, I will definitely be returning to Stave Lake Veterinary Hospital and Dr. Christine Smetschka.

I had a female vet treat me terribly at this clinic, heartless mean uncalled for comments for me to surrender my cat iv had for over 11 years. just needing antibiotics in the end and pain meds she insisted needed blood work to check only to see if he could have the pain med with out a bad reaction i explained i would be able to do that and he will have tp do with out if she wasnt willing to understand feeding my kids was truly important and to only do whats nessessary.she told me i should leave my cat for surrender due to my house hold issues unbelievable this woman had the nerve to be such a cruel human being. Not at all a place I will ever take my pets to again. They over do it!!! They over charge and have no hearts. I go to louheed animal vet and they are the kindest most living amazing place ,the care is wonderful and they play no games and will squeeze u in to help u out when in a tuff spot, they even let me take my cat home with out payment cause I forgot my wallet! I just no it's would have paid out the butt if I had gone to this place.the staff are wonderful but the one vet female there was just a peace of work and the emails can stop cause u guys took so much money from me for the dumbest reasons,my dog sonny ,I was charged close to 1000 over a broken nail, not my favorite and won't ever return and happy to stay away

Highly recommend this vet, I have a very nervous and fear driven dog. They made every accommodation for me to bring her in and not have any other animals around etc. Was one of the most pleasant vets I've ever taken my dog to

The people here are amazing Caring, warm and they really get to know your animal. The first time we went in the vet came out and hung out with our pup for 20 minutes. Then we set an appointment. It really has been an amazing 8-ish months.
