How to Save Money at Wetaskiwin Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The customer service is really bad lately. I'll not complain about the veterinarian's attention, which is good. But it is a nightmare to get an appointment, I booked 1 month in advance, and they didn't book it. They had my dog under 2 different families, then the next time they had my small dog as a big breed dog wrongly. At least the vaccination went alright besides several attempts to convince me to fet pet insurance with the "must convenient option". When I booked a surgery for my pup, the young gal at front desk had several issues and everytime we agreed a date she came back to say no we can't do it, until we finally got one but.... just to find out they didn't schedule it properly or at all. The drive for nothing, and now I'm rushing to get an appointment. The Dr. is good, but they should take better care o the front desk

Dr.Foulston and Vet tech Ian were amazing with our cat son charlie yesterday. Charlie remained very calm even during the check up and ear cleaning. Thank you for helping our kitty feel better and for helping us feel confident in continuing his ear care at home ♡

Great staff. Clean facility. Take my dog once a month for librella shots. Can be a bit pricey as any other vet clinic. If your on a budget be sure to get a quote. My only complaint is that they prefer to do the work quoting "Liability" reasons. They won't give you a prescription for a shot that can easily be done by those who have farm experience. Most vets are moving this way. More money

This place is my go to although it is a drive they are the best for both my dogs. They have helped my big guy with his arthritis and helped my little one cross the rainbow bridge. They show compassion for pets and owners alike.

Would not recommend unless you can see Dr Eliason! Had 2 separate pets that had been seen there for years and both were said to be fine short of issues we were dealing with via meds. We always asked if tests were needed and told no, asked if they were in pain, told no they are fine, just try this and come back if it doesn’t work…..well in both cases, 6 months apart, both pets were seen by a new vet clinic and found to be in bad shape, all tests we had asked for at this vet but told weren’t needed were done at our new vet and found serious issues that could have been treated sooner. Our one pet lasted 4 months before being put down and the other had to be put down less than a week after being seen here by Dr Foulston and told was ok and just try this OTC type med and see if it helps. Was told there was no pain and no issues with any of the areas we thought were a concern….. One trip to our other vet to find out her legs were so atrophy and could barely move back toes, stomach was so tender and sore, ear issues etc and had to be put down….wasn't even 9 and it’s so devastating ! Dr Aliason was great but Dr Foulston spends the whole time telling stories and not actually checking your Pet….. he’s nice but maybe should be just checking the animals in and not actually diagnosing anything!
