How to Save Money at DEWINTON PET HOSPITAL Inc.

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dewinton Pet Hospital is by far the best vet to take your guinea pig. I have a little girl that kept throwing a massive jaw abscess. I had seen another vet, but the abscess kept returning. Then I found Dr.Eva, she came up with a protocol that finally got rid of the entire infection. She was incredibly thorough and diligent with her approach with our girl. I'm happy to say that our little Dill is happy and healthier than she's ever been. Thanks Dr.Eva!!!

This is the best clinic in the Calgary area for exotic vet care! Dr. Eva is a passionate, talented, and thorough veterinarian who will put your mind at ease with thoughtful explanations, supported by her experience and the latest evidence-based research. She has made a world of difference for our beloved bearded dragon and in turn, our family. Her love of animals truly shines through. Overall, the clinic has a very welcoming atmosphere with front desk staff and vet techs who are friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, which makes you feel comfortable and validated. We are so grateful to this wonderful clinic, Dr. Eva, and team!

If I ever decide to get a dog again, I would not think twice about choosing this as their vet. They were the most compassionate, understanding and educational vet I had ever experienced. Dr Maros never let me leave without fully understanding what was Happening with my dog and what my options were. He was genuine, kind and truly cares for animals. The prices were fair, but prices are prices. Every individual in this vet truly loves and cares for your pets as if they were your own. ( or maybe it was because Steven was such a little sweetheart) I will forever be grateful Dr Maros (& vet) accommodated my end of life wishes with my little boy.

I haven’t been a client at Dr. Eva’s clinic for over a year, yet they continue to email me despite multiple unsubscribe requests and repeated messages asking them to stop. This has prompted me to share my experience while I was a client: I brought my bearded dragon, Zero to Dr. Eva in mid-2023, and unfortunately, my experience was not positive. She provided several pieces of incorrect husbandry advice, including recommending that I feed my bearded dragon only hornworms (claiming that any diarrhea from this would "solve itself") and warning that feeding even small amounts of superworms would cause fatal liver or kidney disease. She also advised switching from tile to shredded newspaper as a substrate, which was a terrible suggestion—it was messy, Zero didn’t like it, and he even ingested some of it. When I raised concerns about this advice, I was completely dismissed. Dr. Eva justified her recommendations by stating that she’s kept tortoises for years, which was irrelevant to my situation. I was also uncomfortable with how she handled Zero during the examination. While I understand that vet exams can sometimes seem harsh to pet parents even when they aren't harming the animal, this felt excessive. My typically docile dragon was visibly stressed by how quickly she moved him around and pressed on him when he tried to escape. My experience at my new vet clinic solidified my concerns with Dr. Eva. Zero has never been that stressed during an exam again, and the advice I’ve received since has been accurate and helpful. The new clinic is humble enough (unlike Dr. Eva) to recognize when they do not know something about husbandry but good enough to have accurate understandings of the basics (diet, substrate, lighting, etc). The new clinic offers better pricing, more knowledgeable staff, and a much kinder approach. I would highly recommend you explore Dr. Eichel at Calgary Avian and Exotic Clinic instead of this place.

Best vet I've ever been to, the nurses and doctors are all so friendly and bubbly, positive experience overall. I had 2 hamsters in their care, they took awesome care of both of them and made sure they were comfortable, both hamsters passed but the vets made sure they were as comfortable as possible and even sent me a card with initials which was really kind of then especially during the hard times without my pets
